1) A tummy tuck will help me lose weight. Unfortunately, that is not the goal of a tummy tuck although up to 10 pounds of skin and fat may be removed. For the best results, a patient should be at or quite close to their ideal weight before having surgery.

2) A tummy tuck will get rid of stretch marks. This myth is partially true if those stretch marks are between the belly button and the pubic area. For stretch marks above the belly button, some may be reduced in appearance or lowered to a different location.

3) I can’t have more children after a tummy tuck. While it is recommended that women wait until after they have all the children they want, there is no reason that another pregnancy can’t occur. The only concern is the change to the body so that the benefits from a tummy tuck may be lost and a new surgery needed to correct them.

4) Liposuction cannot be combined with a tummy tuck. This is quite contrary to the truth! Liposuction is frequently combined with abdominoplasty to achieve the best possible results.

5) Drainage tubes will be needed after tummy tuck surgery. While this may be true, it depends on the extent of the surgery and the technique employed by the surgeon.
