Full 6pm newscast from WBUP, the ABC affiliate in the Michigan Upper Peninsula owned by Morgan Murphy Media.
WBUP and CW affiliate WBKP (channel 5) have been Morgan Murphy stations since last year, when the family of Maryland radio station owner Stephen Marks, who died in 2022, decided to sell off most of its TV stations, only keeping most of its radio stations (Morgan Murphy also bought their radio stations in Michigan) as well as two TV stations in Montana, KXGN Glendive and KYUS Miles City, which effectively operate as satellite stations of existing and otherwise unrelated CBS and NBC affiliates in Billings.
Sister station WBKB in Alpena was also included in the acquisition, and that station scaled back on most news production, keeping only small news updates and handing most of the news airtime to Sinclair stations in Cadillac, which led to speculation that WBUP might be on the chopping block as well. But that speculation became more definitive when Nexstar filed paperwork to effectively sell WJMN-TV, a former Big Three affiliate (and former CBS O&O) programmed largely from Green Bay turned independent station with local U.P.-focused news programming, to Morgan Murphy, through sidecar Sullivan's Landing, managed by Ralph M. Oakley, the final CEO of Quincy Media.
WJMN then confirmed earlier this week that it was combining its operation with WBUP's to form "My UP News", with morning, 6pm, 10pm and 11pm newscasts across both stations. It is set to launch this September. In fact, WJMN is already providing some resources to WBUP as of this moment. Previously, WBUP relied on news network/newscast provider NewsNet for its weather segments. Following the network's closure earlier this month, WJMN's chief meteorologist Tom Kippen has been appearing in their place for weather.
On-air presentation is kinda tacky if you ask me. In-house graphics, production music, and the lower thirds, while they do predate Morgan Murphy taking over WJMN, fittingly rips off the L3s from Nexstar's CBS-1, which that station currently uses. (EDIT: WBUP is indeed using Universal Production Music tracks, particularly "Chance Of A Lifetime" on their opens. It still hurts my ears that they didn't splice the track properly.)
