Over 3 million people head to this South Carolina island every summer to take advantage of all the activities it has to offer. Some come for the beaches, others for nature, but they all stay for the incredible fishing in Hilton Head. Whether it’s an inshore trip in the area's bays and sounds or an extended adventure deep into the Gulf Stream, there’s a lot to look forward to.

If we had to choose Hilton Head’s signature fish it would definitely be Redfish. This species is available in the inshore waters surrounding the island year-round, and fish can range from “Puppies” to 30+ inch Bull Reds. While you’re out casting for these fish, you could also come across Speckled Trout and Flounder.

For a slightly more challenging opponent look no further than Tarpon. These fish call Hilton Head’s waters home in the late spring and summer months and can be caught with heavy tackle or on the fly.

Or, for a change of pace, set your sights on Sharks. There are so many Shark varieties on Hilton Head’s doorstep that heading out and fishing for them is the closest you’ll come to a guaranteed catch. Seek out Bonnethead and Blacktip inshore or go deep for big monsters including Mako Sharks.

Hoping on a charter boat and heading into deeper waters will also give you opportunities to bottom fish for the likes of Red Snapper, Grouper, and Black Seabass. If you decide to fish the Gulf Stream, the journey will take you at least 70 miles out. When Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Billfish are on offer, you might find that the journey is well worth it.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, heading out with a local captain who knows these waters inside and out is always a good choice. Not only will they provide your gear but they’ll also cover your fishing licenses. Most importantly, however, they’ll guide your trip based on your skill level and goals for the day.
