Pokemon Crystal 3DS (VC): How to Clone Pokemon / Unlimited Rare Candies and Master Balls

Here's a quick tutorial on How to clone Pokemon and get Unlimited Rare Candies and Master balls in Pokemon Crystal for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.

Whenever I click ‘yes’ I count ‘One Mississippi, Two Mississippi, Three’ then click the touch screen; and it hasn’t failed me yet

FYI to new people trying this, ALWAYS use empty boxes when cloning pokemon, both the box you're depositing the mons into and the box you are switching to. I corrupted my entire Box 4 while cloning and there is a chance it can happen to you as well!

Fortunately because I play it safe all I lost were the 3 clone pokemon I had in that box, if I'd had any other pokemon in there (pokemon I actually wanted to keep) they'd be gone because I can't click withdraw on that box without the screen going completely white and freezing the game. Box 4 is now completely unusable in my save file.

On the plus side I now have a dumping box for glitchy cloned eggs gone wrong...

I definitely got it to work a couple time. It’s definitely easy to corrupt a box. There’s a fix below in the comments though (change to corrupt box, go out with a full team and catch a Pokémon. Come back and you have access to your corrupted box)

OMG, I love you. This is the best way to give Entei and Raiku the finger. I hate catching them so much. I got 6 master balls, ready to catah Entei, Raiku, Ho-oh, Lugia and Celebi. I'm so happy I can get my legendaries and move on to gen 5.

Ok, I got it working on crystal after many tries and failed attempts of even getting it once, I tried a slightly different method. My trick was to press the touch screen basically as soon as the full stop (dot) appeared then resume game and immediately press the touch screen again and reset. Helped with the weird timing and worked for both tries (2nd and 3rd starter). I hope it works for you too :)

Somehow, reading the text as "saving, don't turn off the power BITCH" and then pausing seems to work for me as far as timing goes.

My current tip for people new to this method or people who just want to clone once or twice for the starters or something, I just follow the video.

When you hear the “Beep” that plays when he selects “Yes” at around 2:26, hit yes. When the screen darkens, hit the touchscreen.

As long as you remember to hit the touch screen when he does, you should be fine. I forgot to and the game saved over.

I’m so glad this still works, I used to do it all the time on silver for the gbc and had maxed out lv 100 team with maxed out ivs from cloning rare candies and vitamins. Now I can be able to get celebi on Pokémon Sword and also fill my jhoto dex on home (, :

The cloning glitch was helpful in my playthrough of Silver. Generation 2 had serious level pacing issues, what with the Elite Four's teams starting from Will's Xatu at Level 40 to Lance's Ace Dragonite at Level 50. I didn't overlevel my Pokemon, I kept them around the average levels players would usually have when challenging GSC's Elite Four as I don't want to effortlessly one-shot everyone.

Somehow, what really helps me, besides the Mississippi counting, is listening to the in-game music. Got the three starters on the second try.

I remember back on Pokemon Silver, you would just switch of the GBC as soon as the 3rd ... appeared, and you successfully duped every time. I used that to clone a few masterballs back in the day.
