Pyrrho | The Ultimate Skeptic

Radical skeptics will often doubt the validity of their sensory experiences. That being said, is it possible to practically live while doubting your senses? One of the first skeptics, Pyrrho of Elis, did just that. In his work, The Lives of Eminent Philosophers, Diogenes Laertius records some anecdotes about Pyrrho's life. Apparently, if Pyrrho was having a conversation and the other person left, he would continue talking just to himself. Also, it's said that he did not flinch or react when he underwent surgery.
These anecdotes should be taken with a large grain of salt, but if they were true, it shows how dedicated one may become to one's philosophy. #philosophy #history #skepticism

Pyrrho would live his life based on what seemed to be the truth. To live life sorta in the realm of appearances. The goal of skepticism of the pyrrhonian kind was not to achieve a sense of inaction but rather to an achieve a sense of gentleness and happiness to overcome struggle. This doesn’t mean the skeptics would stay silent when injustice happens and just completely doubt it the way you seem to be implying. They would also not say things like “everything can be doubted” “we only know that we know nothing with 100 percent certainty” as these are absolute terms that can doubted themselves. Diogenes was in such a state of calmness and happiness like the stoics and many ancient Greeks that the pain simply didn’t phase him much.

Well I didn't know that skepticism could go so far, but great video as always, keep the good work, best wishes for this year.

I don't think you can doubt away severe pain either.

I haven't managed to doubt away my pain, but I have managed to doubt away a lot of suffering. I have managed to be skeptical enough about whether my sensations were worth bothering about that I almost began to question if I really was feeling pain at all.

"Is it pain or is it pressure? If it is pain, what happens if I just relax into it? Does it hurt more when I pay attention to it or less?" Getting really curious about pain tends to minimize it.

Great video! tbh pyhrronism is actually well-known in contemporary philosophy, or at least more known than other philosophers. I wouldn't call him forgotten.

I recommend watching/reading Alexander Shadow in order to understand ancient scepticism. He's got the best material on it (although only in russian).

its aye ore likely to prevent and excessive psychological suffering surrounding pain so react to it as it is without over e36ellishin9, it, you know when people say ouch when they didnt even hurt the3selves because they thought something 3ay have hurt if it happened how they expected and yet it didnt? well that could if the expectation is unbearable pain could 3ake us overreact to pain that is not unbearable at all

for the statement nothing can be known, i'd add, with certainty, except... you know where i'm going with this right? cogito ergo sum, but if this dude had thought of this back then is'pose it wouldn't be credited to descartes

Pyrrho may have had a high tolerance for pain and fear. Like free solo climbers, but just happened to dig philosophy. Plus the philosopher's cloak wasn't exactly made for climbing.

this dude should never be studied as he did not figure anything nor was the first person that discovered skepticism.
