220. Peirce's Pragmatism

Charles Peirce's ideas were revolutionary, kicking off an entire philosophical movement now called "pragmatism," but one might argue that his ideas bear little resemblance to the path pragmatism ultimately took...he certainly thought as much.

If Peirce really believed in pragmatism, he would have changed his name to Purse.

Yeah I think Pierce makes a lot of sense. I can see why it could quickly get a bit muddled, like deciding what goals are worth working towards (what is the definition of the "results" we put our focus on. Documentation for code is one thing...) but I run into this a fair bit at work as well.
In politics, too. I'm one of those people that's of the mind that we put too much weight behind rulesets and borders and tradition, and would rather we focus on the livelihood of people. This whole couple of years of people putting focus on the economy, a measurement and tracking of numbers humans made up, prioritized over homing the homeless, prioritized over rehabilitating offenders, and on and on. It has been a frustrating time.
Anyway, I get the feeling that stoicism and pragmatism are if not related then adjacent to each other. I get the impression stoics have the same connotation as pragmatists, of being people focused on results and not worrying as much about the methods/feelings that get them to the places they want to be in life. Stuff to ponder for sure

Note that Peirce´s Theory of Truth puts science in the drivers seat. Well thought out!

Fascinating topic but one I feel prejudiced towards because it already fits into my worldview.
So, a recommendation for the citation section would be to provide some sources which argue against the topic.

Peirce didn't "hate" James and Dewey's take on pragmatism. They just applied the mechanics to another dimensional realm, and Peirce knew about it. He simply changed the name to facilitate the distinction to newcomers. Peirce and James were in regular conversation so they both know which area of interest they each were in, and their implicit distinction. Maybe you thought it would make your story spicier by making it more dramatic, but you are doing a disservice to your audience by introducing inaccuracies.

Beliefs are ideas wrapped in the absence of doubt.

I think the pragmatic maxim falls to kripkes rule following paradox.

Discord is bad. It doesn't deserve agreements under its umbrella. What will actually happen when discord is a good thing.

Given that Peirce renamed his philosophy Pragmaticism for a good reason, why keep deadnaming it?
