I really feel that Ethereum was one of the results of the block size war back in 2015-2017. While a lot of combatants split into the small block and big block camps resulting in Bitcoin Core (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), others just went to the other side of the island (metaphorically) and started a new coin with new features. It has been almost a decade, but I do remember that Vitalik originally wanted to build some programmable features on top of BTC, even if it wasn't Turing complete, but was undermined by the BTC developers.
