I own 3 of these the issue has been resolved by Sena. In the beginning the 20S had an issue connecting to the base for some people, Sena has since replaced the plastic tab on the base with a metal one now the 20S not only connects to the base but stays there.

How stable is it on the helmet? Would it be viable for dirt bike helmets?

Don't buy this crap it has a major design flaw. The unit stops locking to the base due to the flaw. Go look at sena forums, there are tons of people with this problem.
