IBEW Electrician Tool Lists - Required AND Shall Not Furnish

Does the IBEW really have a list of tools that you're required to have AND a list of tools that you're not allowed to bring on the job site?

In this video I go over the two different tool lists (Required and Shall Not Furnish) that are found in our Commercial/ Industrial Agreement at IBEW Local 48, in Portland Oregon.

What's in my tool belt/ what tools I recommend:

Also, if you’re allowed to bring the tools that the contractor must provide, then guess who is and isn’t getting laid off. The dude that brings his own Milwaukee hammer drill and impact will likely stay. There shouldn’t be an arms race to stay employed.

Hey brother, I’m a traveler out of local 60 San Antonio Texas currently working in 48.

I just wanted to commend you on the work you’ve put into this channel. You make great quality videos that really make a strong argument for our union and help to advance the cause.

Personally I love your locals tool list and believe y’all have a very solid agreement in general.

Keep up the great work.

I had my interview last month. I ended up ranking 8. I really appreciate the videos. They help me understand better what I'm getting myself into. Continue to do great content!

my local has a journeyman tool list, and when you join the apprentiship they give you a smaller version of that journeyman tool list. the idea is that throughout your apprentiship (5 years) you can aquire the remaining tools on the journeyman tool list. Also you are allowed to have 100 dollars worth of tools "NOT" above and beyond the journeyman tool list excluding anything the employer is supposed to provide. this allows for you to get some smaller hand tools that you like or prefer to use. there are times that the union seems like a profit machine, however the union is right there by your side fighting for better working conditions, pay, and a plethora of other things for the members. IBEW 340 has been a great place to be i will always be thankful for my time there.

IBEW 58 here. We are not supplied with any free tools here. Ended up costing me about $300 and it wasn't even the full tool list to get the schools "starter kit"

Sooo cool to see you on campus the other day! It felt like meeting a celebrity, hehe! 🙌 😊 Your videos definitely help me stand out in my interview and build a beautiful portfolio, I can't thank you enough 🙏. I just finished my first week of bootcamp for the LEA program. I would be happy to share my experience in the LEA program for your channel, if interested. I believe in your channel and I think it's a HUGE resource for those interested in the trade. The non profit Oregon Tradeswomen organization knows who you are and encourage the women to watch your channel! ⚡💪♀️

How about a video about favorite boots, pants, and other pieces of clothing that you found best or most helpful as an electrician.

Just finished my interview and ranked 9. But since the top 3 are starting in a couple weeks the lady at the training center told me that my rank is more like 6 and Should be starting this fall. I feel like my past experience and my willingness to start the apprenticeship over from the bottom helped.

Found these videos after a cursory search into electricians unions and how the process of getting involved is.

I have now decided I'm going to pursue this fully, and give it my best. I'm 24 with 7 years of experience in the trades already, so I'm confident in my chances!

Thanks for posting this video. I've been thinking about joining my local for a while now. I talked to the recruiter a year ago, and he mentioned that I only need basic tools, but wouldn't tell me what those tools are.

I've been a non-union electrician for 15 years. I have a lot of tools. It's hard for me to wrap my head around things like, don't bring a multi meter. Have to have a hacksaw. What would I even use an awel for? I buy tools to make my life easier. Band saw, M12 cable cutter, M18 knockout kit (1/2" to 4"). Thousands of dollars in tools making half what a union guy makes, and I'm only required to bring maybe a couple hundred dollars worth??

I started in the trade when I was 20, and I'm 35 now. I don't even break $50k a year, I have expensive healthcare just for myself, I can't afford to cover my kids (my ex wife has them insured), and I have no retirement to speak of. I can't even begin to imagine how much different my life would be now if I had joined the union then...

Starting my apprenticeship next week! I'm so excited!! I also got ranked 5! I only had to wait two weeks. Thanks for all the videos!

Love your content but what I find ironic, especially for a sparky, is the hanging extension cords along the wall. 🤣 That's my two cents! Keep up the great work. ✌️

The not list is also to make it fair between workers, example.. we will hire worker A because he has his own bender and band saw, Worker B doesn't. thats why we have a tool list. To keep it equal between workers.

I'm a 2 yr apprentice in a non-union company and i've spent close to $7, 000 in tools. Everything from hand tools, power tools, testers, Knockout kits, benders of all sizes. But when it comes to lay offs and the company has to downsize, I'm never laid off. Unfortunely thats how it is, you wanna keep working? Bring your everything, at that point, your more useful then they guy who just brought a few hand tools and thats it.
