Super Paper Mario is the Gen 5 of Paper Mario

It was so hated back in the day but it's actually really underrated.

If there’s one thing at least just about everyone can agree on, it’s that the OST is consistently good throughout the franchise

To be fair arguing about both Paper Mario trilogies is an unfair comparison.

My experience with sticker star is interesting as i got it when i was 8 years old, the target audience… apparently.

it was my first paper mario and looking back at it now i can say that it was probably the most boring or worst experiences ive had with a video game.

The Paper Mario Amiibo is mid (due to the fact that it doesn’t exist).

Idk if i'm just blinded by nostalgia, but even now playing back through sticker star I still love the game, is it better than the rest of the games? no, but imo its still an amazing game, especially for it being a 3ds game, plus the soundtrack is goated too

The biggest reason how Sticker Star triggered me is that it’s not The Thousand Year Door.

My beef is Sticker Star is no unique character designs, and the fact Paper Peach and Paper Bowser have zero dialogue that just make them not actual characters, just plot devices. I’ve often seen people saying Peach in the mainline games is useless and has no personality. That’s because the Spin-Offs are supposed to show she can have personality. The casual mainline plot just doesn’t work for Spin-Offs because that’s not what they are known for. From being a person who would interact with others while being kidnapped or even being a fighter, that was what made her stand out and feel alive, not some dull lifeless puppet. Same goes for Paper Bowser. In the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls Ad, he was shown to be a caring father to Bowser Jr. In other spin-offs like the Mario And Luigi RPGS he’s funny and it makes him a likable villain. In Sticker Star he’s just “Big bad guy. Nothing else!”

As much as Sticker Star sucked it was my very first paper mario game, as a kid you don't care about good or bad you just care if its fun and thats what I thought when I was younger. I could be made fun of for my tastes yeah sure but at the end of the day I'm having fun and thats that.

Honestly, I can understand 64 and TTYD being over worshipped and praise. Some of that love should go to Super. Well, at least Super is getting the love it needs now.

I always believe stickers star was good, it was the puzzles that got me confused when I was a kid

I have not seen a single person who dislikes the first Paper Mario. TTYD and SPM, understandable, but original? Never seen them for some reason.

I've played PM64, SPM, PMSS, PMCS (I plan on getting TTYD and PMOK soon)
and what I can say is this:

SPM was my very first Paper Mario game, I still have the disc from 2009 when I first got it, unscathed,

I might be a bit biased, but it was enjoyable, and as much as a “black sheep” the game was, it felt very Paper Mario, it even retains some core features even if combat is removed; it's focused alot on exploration, but there really isn't alot of backtracking, there's maybe like 1-2 instances where you have to go back a world, but most of it is just running around Flipside, not that bad though because it kind of acts as a rest area; as Paper Mario games should be, it's focused alot on story, and it's heavy
whenever there was an obstacle to overcome and you needed a clue, Tippi was not too vague but not too obvious with them either, my only gripe with the clues is that I tried to manually get 1, 000, 000 via physical labour and even sat something on my wiimote, only realising at around 600, 000 that there was an easier way
SPM _REALLY_ wasn't that big on combat though Fracktail/Wracktail, Brobot, and Underchomp were actually interesting battles however
honestly (most) of the music isn't really that catchy or whatever but it's pretty good and memorable, I wish tracks like Mimi's first battle theme and the Yold Ruins got more attention though; overall 8.8/10

Second game, PMSS, 2013. You know, looking back I hated this game, at the time I was like “this game is so fun” but I was lying to myself, I was constantly frustrated with the fact that whenever clues were given I STILL couldn't figure anything out; I looked at about maybe 7 tutorials throughout the game, these games are clearly aimed towards children so giving them hard to crack clues isn't exactly the best
the Kamek battles were the most annoying thing; it wasn't about having to only use slippers, it was that I'd end up wasting good stickers alot, there was literally no reason to this. Also the entire sticker mechanic in general, honestly, not that bad, but even SPM which required you to obtain a Partner/Pixl that you get, probably, 20 hours into the game, still has a basic function of any Mario game for free: JUMPING; if you manage to run out of stickers it's pretty much over.
I can't deny that the music was absolutely extravagant though, and some bosses were fun fights, but also it was just hoping you had the correct sticker as well as spamming certain cards
Nintendo wasn't really at their best here

I also wanna add that this was THE FIRST PAPER MARIO GAME WHERE THEY ACTUALLY EMPHASIZED THE CHARACTERS WERE MADE OUT OF PAPER, I don't have a gripe with that, but, it's oddly notable?
5.3/10

PMCS, 2017
Nintendo stepped their game up here but still had some of the same annoying mechanics and flaws from Sticker Star, even requirements of certain cards to take down bosses, HOWEVER they were not as annoying with them as with Sticker Star, and the bosses were actually fun to fight to an extent.
Puzzles were kind of annoying, but not because of vaguenesser like Sticker Star had. The cast of enemies somehow felt less diverse than Sticker Star though, not that I really care because, it's a Paper Mario game. again absolutely extravagant music, I have nothing to say though other than it being “Sticker Star 2” but this definitely was a massive step up, I still wouldn't call it a good Paper Mario game, but honestly I wouldn't call it a bad one either. solid 7/10

PM64, 2018
honestly I don't have anything to say about this game... but I don't have anything not to say about the game either; I ran around in circles alot, but it wasn't because of confusion, it was because I could; this game, like SPM had alot of exploration aspect, and it was really grindy. I backtracked alot even when it wasn't technically necessary but I'd feel like I was underprepared too. It had alot of weird aspects to it that I think were cool. The boss fights were fun, but actually preparing and grinding for them wasn't; I somehow always felt and was underprepared, there was no escaping it. It did have alot of good puzzles and challenges though, not too hard, not too easy, though I did look up a tutorial exactly once.
My real gripes with it is how fragile the game is, I've fallen out of bounds thrice by accident. Also the ending is just... fireworks, it doesn't feel like a reward for any accomplishments I've made along the way
like SPM the music wasn't over the top and extravagant, but it was pretty decent as it was and memorable, and honestly for those games I think they're fine like that, it doesn't make the game too cartoonish while also not being too serious.
8.5/10
