After contractual disagreements with Neil Sedaka, the songs composers offered it to Gene Pitney. However, the arrangement and backing vocals, piano-playing, and usual female backup singers were all recorded by Neil Sedaka while dubbing Pitney's vocal to the main tracks. A TOP TEN SONG OF 1964!

Driving beat, beautiful strong, emotional vocals. Gene really knew how to cry us a song.

This was filmed in Boston Harbor, Pier 4, in 1963. Gene is standing on the LSS Wentworth - built in 1863 - the oldest documented vessel at that time. (Was shown on Dick Clark's "Where The Action Is".)

He was only 64 when he died.
Totally gone on his music since i was 16.
I sing and dance and whistle to all his music.
Makes me feel so good.

Gene Pitney was very under rated.
I tell Alexa to "play Gene Pitney's greatest hits" once a day
and it never gets old

A true Icon. A voice that most musicians wished they had. Excellent stage presence. Kept the audience in awe!

Kids having fun dancing with each other, not staring at Tinder on their cell phones. What a concept.

One of the least-remembered, yet greatest male vocalists ever. This song, so many others, such an incredible voice. Those of us of a certain age had an innocence then, and he articulated our yearnings, our regrets, our fate so well. I won't say I had a favorite of his. HE was a favorite, in all he sang.
