5 major reasons historians believe the Gupt Dynasty was of Brahmins, 0 reasons of other communities except for doubts.

Reason 1: Samudragupt married Licchhavi's daughter to raise his status even more as an Emperor as Licchhavi's existed since the Mahajanpadas (A Brahmin is allowed to marry Kshatriya, but the opposite is not).

Reason 2: Gupt had a bigger matrimonial alliance with another Brahmin dynasty of Deccan, Vakatakas. A bigger matrimonial alliance means the two dynasties belonged to the same caste, as intercaste marriages were rare.

Reason 3: Gupt came around that time when the whole of India was under the rule of Brahmins - Shungas, Kanvas then Gupta's in North; Satavahanas then Vakatakas in Deccan; Pandyas, Cheras, Pallavas in South. All were Brahmin dynasties that emerged around post Mauryan period till post Gupta period.

Reason 4: Skandagupta gotra specifically mentioned in Skandapurana as "Dharana" - a gotra mainly used by Purvanchal Brahmins.

Reason 5: Gupt were staunch Hindus, almost as orthodox as Shungas, patronized Brahmins rituals and practices, took titles of Brahmins kings and did Ashwamedha Yajna multiple times.

Historians who claim that Gupt were of Vaishya origin has only one claim that their surname is Gupta and historians who claim that Gupt were of Kshatriya origin has only one claim that they were warriors. Both don't have any solid proofs as we have seen from the Shungas to Peshwas that Brahmins too were warriors and many Brahmins had Gupt as a title like Vishnugupt Chanakya,
Shivagupta Balarjuna, Vajraghata Vishnugupta, Somadeva Vishnugupta, etc. These all are Brahmin names.
