At the Toronto International Film Festival, Taika Waititi discussed putting the power back into the hands of Indigenous storytellers; as well as the landmark film Smoke Signals, starring Canadians Tantoo Cardinal and Adam Beach, which boasts an all-Indigenous production — from director and writer, to cast and crew.

Taika Waititi is a writer, director, and actor from New Zealand. He most recently directed the critically acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok (17), which has made over $850 million worldwide. His credits as writer-director include episodes of Flight of the Conchords (07–09), the short film Two Cars, One Night (04), and the feature films Eagle vs Shark (07), 42 One Dream Rush (09), Boy (10), What We Do in the Shadows (14), and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (16).

Indigenous peoples have lots of stories and lore. Most of it burned or destroyed by the Europeans.
