Yeah carved Turnips look like something you see just before an entire village dies of plague.

The carved turnip is voodoo level. It hints at a dimension of things we have decided is not a good fit for us at the current time 🎃

I live near Newcastle upon Tyne and we always carved turnips on Halloween. The smell of burning turnip haunts me.

In Scotland we carve neeps as we call them too. I still carve neeps with my bairns. The Irish brought the tradition of carving lanterns to America but the Americans used pumpkins as they were easier and more readily available.

They then called them Jack O’lanterns because they were outside the homes of Irish people meaning he was Jack O’lantern, like O’Shea or O’Sullivan etc.

Most folk in Scotland are on pumpkins these days too. They are just easier but I feel more achievement from carving out a neep it’s more of a challenge, they look more genuinely creepy and it’s more traditional but I’m in the minority these days. Neepie lanterns are a dying art. But whatever floats your boat. You do you pal. Live and let live.
