Romanization: An Outdated Historical Concept?

Показать описание
The spread of Roman culture, from the city of Rome outwards through the occupied Roman provinces of the Empire, is a process which has been fittingly called Romanization. The concept has been a helpful tool to study the diffusion of Roman culture, which is why numerous historical, archaeological, and sociological works have made use of the concept. Even today, articles, books, and conferences are being held around the concept. However, over the years, the concept has also received heavy criticism by modern scholars, with people in academia outrightly abandoning the term and condemning its use within the field of ancient history.
In this video, I want to dive into the use of the term and concept of Romanization, and show why the concept can be considered outdated. However, I also want to show why people still argue for it’s use, and why it is still used today in academic works.
