From my video about upcycling scrap fabrics, a lot of requests came through for this beret tutorial. Feel free to recreate and share yours online too.

Whew, this was a little challenge for me! Not because it was "difficult", but I made the mistake of trying to -rush- it. I'm really a quilter, so let me tell ya- TAKE TIME JOINING THAT 3-D, 7-PIECE JUNCTION! I had to seam-rip sooo much, also melted my cheap mystery-lining on my iron, and was too stingy on my seam allowance when I cut the pattern, oh gosh...These don't really have anything to do with the video, just venting LOL! I know better, really I do!

Anyway, I'm happy with the instruction: YT has a lot of creepy-mannequin models and unstylish materials among beret tutorial videos, but this one is just more appealing all around. I wanted a more structured hat than a plain beret, and there aren't as many free "patterns" for something like this, so it's very generous and helpful.

My project might've been better with a more "dramatic" material like in the video, rather than a dull, traditional houndstooth like I used. Bolder colors, fun prints, interesting textures... that sort of thing. Mine makes me look a bit "lunch lady", so I need to be particular about the angle I wear it. The fit is good though, and it's a warm little hat. A very satisfying little project, imo :D

Hi Kim, your laying out the "ballooning oval" shape is perfect for making Medieval and Renaissance style hats, as well as modern designer Berets. Thank you for the tutorial which ended up being more than a Beret lesson. So many endless possibilities from using the French Curve pattern rule!
