Oh, and UPI does NOT have transaction fees, which has been a rather important contributer to its widespread adoption.

David learning about and sharing the benefits of UPI wasn't something I really expected.

QR payments are more common in Asia than tap to pay alternatives

Here in Brazil we have Pix wich is basically the same thing. The USA is behind in terms of tech in this area.

I remember before UPI became a thing, NFC could only be found in flagship or higher priced phones. It was kept as a "premium" feature (ironic for a pretty cheap tech). Then UPI arrived and eliminated the need for NFC, and now pretty much every phone has NFC and next to nobody uses it😂

UPI is growing rapidly in India.
In daily life it goes like, open payment app, scan QR code, enter amount, enter your upi pin and done.

UPI actually works in many more countries.

Same case here in Malaysia. We mostly use qr to make payment doesn't matter how small the purchase is. All of the bank here support it by using the bank app

Here in Indonesia, we need NFC to top up cash cards, which are widely used for public transport, toll payments, parking fees, and sometimes convenience store payments. So, at least for people living in Jakarta, no NFC is a deal breaker, IMO

Not just India, most of the world doesn't use NFC for payments.

After using NFC here in NA, I don't miss UPI at all, maybe only for sending money to my friends. But yeah NFC is amazing and can't imagine my life without it.

Came in thinking "This phone doesn't have wireless?"

Left understanding that's not what it was about

No headphone jack is honestly way bigger of a deal than no NFC. Its a budget phone, people want budget earbuds. all high value budget earbuds are wired.

No, I live in the US and have never used NFC. I don't use my phone to make payments in stores.

Yup... And transactions are done using applications like Google Pay, Paytm and many others, making use of QR codes or using mobile phone numbers. All or almost all shops have a QR code at the cash counter which customers scan and pay their bills. The use of NFC is pretty much non-existent in India. I've never seen anyone use it even if their phones support NFC and neither have I used this feature.

The best thing is that it is accepted by everyone, you can use it in vegetable store to online subscription payments to booking flights, buying a new phone, tuition fee payments etc.

Similar apps are widely used in the Nordics
