Graduate visa - WARNING!

Some students are missing the boat for a graduate visa by either leaving the UK after their studies, OR coming back into the UK as a visitor and THEN trying to apply for a Graduate Visa.

This is likely to prevent you from applying.

So the Graduate visa gives you either 2 years (after a one year degree, like a Masters) or 3 years (after a PHD), to stay in the UK and work or be self-employed, for example.

Unfortunately it is not possible to switch from a Visitor visa to a Graduate visa.

Students are only eligible to apply for the Graduate Route from within the UK, AFTER their degree has been awarded. In terms of the degree "being awarded", this isn’t referring to Graduation, this is referring to the exam board confirming your final award. So, you can ONLY apply for the Graduate Route if you are in the UK on a valid Student visa. It is not possible to apply for the Graduate Route from overseas.

Please bear this in mind if you are a student. You need to plan this out, so there is no gap between your student visa term and you applying for the Graduate visa.

I submitted my dissertation at the end of this January and got a 2 month extension on my student visa to accommodate this change. However, despite the provisional evaluation having been completed, the final results will not be disclosed till 4th May and my visa is expiring on 15th April. I was told that my Student Visa cannot be extended further whereas I cannot apply for a Graduate route visa without the results. This situation is very depressing as i will be crushed under my student loan and would not be able survive.

Kindly advise what action I can take and/or which Visa would be suitable for this limbo period.

Hi, I have deferred my dissertation and an exam due to extenuating circumstances which were approved by Faculty. My exam will be on 11 Dec and my dissertation deadline is 17 January followed by an online presentation on 30 January. My student visa expires on 24 January. The Exam Board will be in February/March. How do I convince the uni to let me extend my student visa? I am sure a lot of students extend their dissertation so do unis not really help in such circumstances? The uni website says that they do not issue a CAS for students who defer their dissertation :( any advice??
