In this video, we recap the 2024 American Athletic Conference Football Media Day that happened today, July 23rd. Coaches Alex Golesh and Trent Dilfer both advocated (strongly) for competitive scheduling despite the CFP Committee's lack of attention to "strength-of-schedule" when making their G5 selection last season. Commissioner Tim Pernetti addressed everything head on including expansion and the future of the Army/Navy Game. Memphis is the favorite to win the conference. Can ECU put together a run in 2024 similar to Tulane in 2022? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

You gave Golesh one of the most iconic and coldest responses I’ve ever seen at a Media day for any conference

Temple/NJ: Very good production today, EXCEPT, the Commissioner Q&A was cut short and NOT added at the end. I was waiting for Trey’s questions, but FAU started right on time.

Realignment is both really fun and frightening at the same time. It’ll be interesting to see what they do in the future.
With the Group of Five, I see American as the top tier with Mountain West being close while Sun Belt is mid tier and CUSA & MAC on lower.
As realignment occurs I can see American looking at the other conferences for replacements while the other conferences look at the FCS.

The PAC-2 is definitely looking at AAC & MW in their journey of keeping the pac alive.

I’d like to hear Pernetti’s thoughts on innovative ways to get more money for the conference

Strength of schedule was a great question!! Sunbelt also a tough conference.

When army and navy go to renegotiate their TV deal, will the games value go up or down? In the future, it appears that this game will be played on the same weekend as the first week of the college football playoff.

This is my take on aggressive scheduling. Schedule 1 P2s or 2 P4s, and all FBS. Only schedule an FCS school IF a P2 requires 2 for 1 deal. This will make the AAC schedule 12-0 and 11-1 possible for multiple AAC Teams. It showcases the AAC. Should an AAC school prefer to schedule only 1 P4 and 3 FBS schools, this would be acceptable too.

I’m a Memphis fan since 1976. They beat the 6th ranked Auburn team on the plains. Memphis plays Florida State there this year. Shout out to Coach Norvell for agreeing to play the game. The reason I mentioned the Auburn win is to make the point that anything is possible

However we are scheduled to play the other AAC favorites on the road so it will be challenging.

Curious about the longevity of the American in its current state. With the state of conference realignment recently do you see any major changes to the American in the coming years in regard to its member schools?

Appalachian State and liberty University should be your top two schools to be considered for the ACC in the future! Logistically, academically, level of facilities, and currently already successfully playing ACC schools in numerous sports.

Temple’s HC Drayton only won the best suit and tie award at Media Day. The OL Coach Weieshan’s comments on 247Sports/Temple were more important. Temple’s starting QB will NOT be the one who finishes the starter.

Listen, I’m a Liberty fan. I don’t mind if teams getting the bid if they are playing these P5 teams and winning; however, if you are scheduling them and getting stomped, what have you proven? Here is the truth. These schools need money, so they don’t want to be penalized for their cash grab, regardless of whether or not they win. Liberty doesn’t need that money. It’s not that we don’t want to play these schools. Our AD has said time and again that his phone does not ring from P5 schools and that it is difficult to get them to schedule us. So, let’s not act like it’s about football though. It’s about money.

First time I have heard that the likely team in the playoffs will come from the American conference! Probably not likely.
