Zulu time explained! What is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)? This is also known as Zulu time. Zulu time gives us a way to fly across different time zones without getting confused on what time it is. When we use UTC time, it also helps ATC and other agencies know which time we are talking about when we are flying across multiple time zones. I also show how to calculate Zulu time for the test! This is all information that you will need to know to become a pilot. This information will help you study for the Private Pilot written exam and the oral exam for your check ride. This training is intended to follow the aeronautical knowledge areas in Part 61.105 section b for single engine aircraft.

YOU should be commended & receive a trophy! I know people who’ve been in law enforcement for YEARS, but don’t know “0000 hours” is an actual time! They only write “2359” or “0001” hours. It’s obvious to me they’re skipping 1 minute EVERY TIME! THANK YOU!

Also, thank you for explaining ZULU time so clearly!

3:41 the way I remember is spring forward so we're 1 hour closer to ZULU. I love in the west coast so, standard time is 8 so we spring forward so I subtract 1 hour. Conversely, we fall back sick we go farther from YT so I add more time, (1hr) =8.

It is from the French Coordonnées du temps universel and when translated into correct English: Universal Time coordinates

"Zulu" is not just military slang. The world is divided into 25 time zones, each one (except for two I'll mention later) nominally 15 degrees of longitude wide.
There are 12 time zones in the Eastern hemisphere and 12 in the Western. The Eastern time zones are given the designators of "A" through "M" (there is no "J") and the Western time zones are given the designators "N" through "Y".
The time zone that straddles the prime meridian, from 7.5 degrees west longitude to 7.5 degrees east longitude, is given the designation "Z". That is your Zulu time zone.
Remember those two weird ones? Time zones Mike, in the Eastern hemisphere, and Yankee, in the Western hemisphere, are each only 7.5 degrees wide and they are located on either side of the International Date Line. Time zones Mike and Yankee have the same clock time (12 hours off of UTC) but different calendar dates.
There is a painfully long explanation of UTC, time zones, and how to do calculations involving time, in the rather large tome, _American Practical Navigator, _ more informally known as _Bowditch._
There is a nice table giving the time zones of virtually every location around the world in _The Nautical Almanac, _ which is published jointly every year by the United States Naval Observatory and Her Majesty's Stationery Office.

The written is easy. You have a chart. It's way more difficult when they ask you this on the oral with no reference material. The written is easy compared to the oral.

Hey great video! Just want to know if I should use daylight savings or not when it comes to converting? Also is there a way for me to always know what amount of time I should add depending on my time zone; because it changes from year to year.

Edit: never mind I rewatched the video and caught it!

The abbreviation is French, which puts the adjective at the end. It’s like “SI” for the International System of units.

That’s hilarious. He made fun of us for driving on the left side of the road but he didn’t even pronounce Greenwich properly 😂

For the pop quiz, you said the flight would be 2 hours around, how would that add hours to zulu time if you're just flying around??😭

So, I understand how the calculation works like you explained. But I was looking for an answer to a different question regarding UTC. Which you may have answered but I overlooked it because understanding it is a bit confusing for a beginner. To be fair, I am not a pilot nor am I interested in becoming one, but to anyone who can answer my question it is much appreciated.

My question is, what does the UTC+8 mean? Add 8 hours? Or is it something that I missed. This is a genuine question, I've been having a hard time understanding it. Thank you!

Sir, the conversion for daylight time is also given in the conversion chart, so I think Ono more extra effort is needed

Ha ha, I used to know these things! And so much more.

Sorry I don't understand 5:18 . 1200-0300z = 12:00-03-00
1100-0200z- 11:00- 02:00
How did you do it
06:00am-9:00pm ---0600-2100z?

This just affirms to me how we need to do away with daylight saving time. Lol
