Why Bushido Teaches You to Die #Shorts

In a book called Hagakure written during the Edo period, there is a famous quote that says “Bushido is about dying.” Because this one phrase has become popular, many people have an image that Bushido is something scary. In order to truly understand what this means, we need to deepen our knowledge about this book a little more.

What the author of Hagakure consistently says is that a samurai must always have a clear idea of his beliefs and be able to act without thinking when the time comes.

Let’s say you’ve faced a life or death situation. What clouds our judgment at that time, is our obsession with life.

This book teaches us to believe that our lives are already over every morning so that we won’t get lost in the moment. But you can't do that unless you have a clear belief in life and that you are always living without regret. This is what the author means by “Bushido is about dying."

But if you understood the words differently, please let me know in the comments.

From what I learn, Bushido is more about accepting death as part of life. And it is as you said that every morning it feels like a new life for samurai. Basically, live everyday as if it was your last and not fear it at any given moment but accept it when it comes.

A quote I found to be most insightful about to this philosophy is “The fear of death is simply the fear of pain or the unknown.”

I want everyone to know that dying in a life or death battle as a samurai was a honor among your peers. Bushido can teach us all the way. You don't have to be a samurai, but a lot of us can benefit ourselves just simply by killing our egos first and letting go of material items.

I always wanted to have this vision of life without regrets because I have been an anxious person since I was little and I hold a lot of grudges against myself and I don't know how to forgive myself and love myself

"The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." ~Samuel Clemens (aka, Mark Twain).

Some people believe that fearing death is literally the fear of being alive. Most people are afraid to face their own mortality.

Musashi said something similar in the Book of Five Rings.
"Generally speaking, the way of the warrior is resolute acceptance of death".

Vikings also had a similar view.

I have had many fights. The thoughts you go through decide if you win or lose. An this teaching is very important.
Not many really want to fight but when someone brings it to your door it is more dangerous for you to have a mind which is seeking a way out.
A mind of fear.
Its easy to teach people how to fight. But much harder to teach 'when' you should fight.

I like how you explained that. It was clear, easy to understand, and to the point. It reminds me of something that I was taught as a boy. I was told live to die or you will die to live. The meaning behind that is if you go into the day accepting it as it comes then you can face the troubles with a calm peaceful mind. However if a person were to focus on their expectations then they would have the failures of the past and the uncertainties of the future eating at them.

"Teach me how to die each day so I may truly live." I think this calls upon the duty of sacrificing parts of ourselves to die. Perhaps this means letting go of ego and comfort, fully devote time and effort, being clear from fear and being unattached by earthly possessions. Because sometimes we need to leave things behind if we are to take the next step.

I never understood this quote before, but this makes a lot of sense to me now. It also makes sense that there would be an emphasis on understanding one’s own beliefs and convictions, since being unclear on these things would definitely inhibit the ability to make split-second decisions. If you already understand what your own objective is, you will know what to do when the time comes. Essentially, learning how to die.
