It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. Reciting the Rosary every day followed by the Litany is the best gift we can give to our Mother during October.
The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Marian litany originally approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V also known as the Litany of Loreto after its first-known place of origin, the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto (Italy)
The litany contains many of the titles used formally and informally for the Virgin Mary, and would often be recited as a call and response chant in a group setting. A partial indulgence is granted to those who recite this litany.[6] The invocations, generally very short, have two parts: the first of praise (Virgo clemens), the other of supplication (Ora pro nobis).
Fourteen invocations (including two new ones) refer to Mary as Mother; six extol her as Virgin. Thirteen titles are derived from the Old Testament, followed by five calling on her as helper and advocate (including Solace of the migrants). The last thirteen name Mary as Queen. In June 2020, Pope Francis added three new invocations in the litany.
Let us reflect, meditate and pray on the Titles given to Mother Mary throughout the month of October. Though there are 55 Titles we will try to meditate on one or two or three sometimes every day and ask Mother Mary to intercede for us. Ave Maria!🙏
