It's not that they are behind the drum major, they are actually playing right with her. It just seems that way because the speed of sound is slower than the speed of light so by the time the sound is recorded by the camera it is slightly behind the drum major.

This might be a stupid question, but I've noticed that in almost every video I've seen of a drum corp waning up, the band is always perfectly together, but always behind the drum major? Do they do this on purpose? Why?
