Option D: Call another hospital and have the patient transported there. If not possible, have a surgeon on staff from another hospital guide you through the surgery over video call.

I’d get the drunk surgeon to guide me because if he’s able to be responsible enough to say he’s so drunk that it would be dangerous, he can probably guide me through the procedure.

Plus, if I don’t do the operation, he could die . If I do the procedure he could die. If I get the drunk surgeon to guide me he could die. He could die either way. But if I have help, the chance is lessened.

If you're legally cleared to do this procedure, you do the most conservative amount of work possible to maintain the patients health. Also, informed consent.

Check with the 1st surgeon to see if what he is doing is something you can do and take over for him which frees him up to do the other surgery.

A: I have done this. I printed out the relevant pages from my surgery textbook, highlighted the steps and got on with it, relying on my surgical skills. Patient recovered and lived a happy, healthy life.

The on call surgeon who's phone was off would get absolutely blasted when they can be reached again.

I was hoping you would answer that question doctor😅

I’d call my brother.
He’s never seen anyone do surgery before

A. Doesn't matter the crappy circumstances, the harsh truth is this is your case now. You're responsible for this patient and it's your responsibility to do whatever you can to help them. Bringing in someone who's drunk is a hazard (and a breach of protocol in most places), so you're stuck with either doing it or scrambling to find some other solution while you're wasting precious time that your patient likely doesn't have. So do it. Prepare however you can, trust yourself and take the leap. Give your patient that chance.

For liability sake send them away to another hospital and keep the patient comfortable while transferring.

I would call another hospital’s surgeon and get info on how to do it. Usually the pt is transferred out to a hospital that has a surgeon that can perform the procedure. If he doesn’t get the surgery, he will die. But if you do the surgery and he dies, you will prob be blamed for it

Option D. Hope to god I can do the surgery the other doctor is doing and he takes my patient.

I think the correct thing is to try to keep the patient stable. Attempting to do a surgical procedure you’re not familiar with could end up backfiring, with or without guidance.

Ask for the most senior nurse or a nurse from that department and have them guide me through the surgery.

I'd run home crying wondering why I ever wanted to become a doctor in the first place!

(B) doing anything else would be reckless.
Operative facts: *you are a trainee;* the surgeon on call is not responding to calls.
Isn’t the surgeon on call supposed to be there/accountable for this specific circumstance?

I would keep the patient comfortable and stable as far as possible and meanwhile i will study that entire surgery just in case no senior surgeon managed to come and help.

No one's performed a surgery until it's been done. That's everything, literally everything in life. Ask for guidance, just the cliff notes of what can go wrong and what to look for. There is no need to have a drunk surgeon convince you to take potential risks, but they can tell you important stuff before happening. Although, if the surgery is beyond my understanding, then they have to wait.

Option C has actually saved a lot of lives

This question is why I couldn't be a doctor. Either you keep the patient comfortable and let them pass or you try to do it yourself. Either way it's gonna be a lawsuit because the doctor isn't experienced and the others aren't available. It will be a problem no matter what
