Cut Out Backgrounds and Keep Original Shadows in Photoshop

It only works if the image already had an existing shadow and has a white background. So folks keep your manual shadow technique as a backup anyways.

Ahhhh i tried it on a normal Photo, but you need the shadow of the original for the recomposition. Now the penny dropped. Thanks! Great technique!

I remember being so excited when we saw the Extract Shading Sneak Peek at MAX 2015. That was going to be a game changer with all sorts of applications in 'make composites look real' projects. I was so disappointed when that was dropped. Bert Monroy is my #1 Photoshop hero (You come a close second Jesus) and he has some great tutorials on making shadows look real.

I don’t do it this way. I trace the shadow, then on a new layer i fill it with a shadow colour, multiply layer blend mode, reselect the shadow selection, then add a layer mask then just gaussian blur the mask. You can change the opacity of the shadow layer too.

I wonder why the white background part from the second layer doesn't show on the end result. I guess I'm missing something..

Or just duplicate the layer, flip it upside down and liquify it

It's so useless when it's a very specific scenario and the tutorial is not a techinque but rather a list of things to do. Fast video for easy engagement, I get it, but the quality of the advice is not great.
