Japan earthquake triggers tsunami warning

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake and dozens of aftershocks have struck the Western edge of Japan, sparking tsunami warnings for residents along hundreds of miles of coastline.

Buildings have collapsed, trapping people under rubble and as night fell, power and communications networks were still down.

Tens of thousands of people have been told to evacuate with the threat of more quakes and tsunamis to come.

While all those affected have my deepest sympathy, one can only admire how well the country is prepared for an event like this. And not only the structural integrity of the buildings but the calm and almost professional way people seem to react: No panic, just sitting down and checking the alerts on their phone. Very impressive.

Notice how the entire coastline of Sadogashima, including the parts facing east away from the epicentre, was highlighted for evacuation: the tsunami is set to rebound off mainland Japan and hit the island from the other side as well.
