Coastwatch follows Fishery Officers from The Ministry for Primary Industries, NZ Airforce and Navy personnel, and the Maritime Police. Greenstone gets up close and personal to find out what’s involved in patrolling and enforcing the law that protects our coastlines, water-ways and billion dollar Kai-moana industries.

We also follow the men and women volunteering for Northland Regions Coastguard, and the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter. Tasked with responding to mayday calls, medical emergencies, on-water breakdowns and accidents, they keep our waterways, and those on them, safe. The Maritime Police, along with the Police National Dive Squad, are also on high alert for any maritime emergencies.

that female police officer sounds like a primary school teacher. Just the way she talks reminds me of mine.

Wow, I can't believe how lenient the fines and penalties are in NZ. I know a guy in Australia who got caught with excessive abalone and copped an $80, 000 fine.

The pathetically low fines ; probably been the same for 40 years, is an incentive for these CRIMINALS to take the chance. It will probably take ANOTHER 40 years for the fast asleep Judiciary to WAKE UP.

Poaching fines are less than the price of fish from the store.

Too lenient for a multiple offender. Should have taken his boat, car, all the fish, and a short jail term might be a deterrent.

$250 for that amount of fish over the limit? That is ridiculously cheap, it should have been 10Xs that amount!

He had prior convictions and that's all they did?! What a tiny slap on the wrist! He's going to back out there overfishing, harming the fish ppopulation thus ultimately fishing industry and tourism. His next haul will easily make up that measly fine. What an absolute joke. I would've laughed in their faces.

too lenient. they lied, several times, they had way more than the limit, they hid fish, they had undersized.... they should lose their boat and pay $5k fine for the captain, and $1500 each for the others.

At $250.00 each, hardly worth the effort !

Once over or under limits, confiscate the whole catch, higher fines.

penalties must be made much more severe. NZ is going to end up with fishery stocks completely depleted between recreational rules abuse and commercial overfishing by foreign trawlers stripping the sea of all life

why weren't they arrested their car and boat seized? talk about a slap on the hand, bet your life these guys will do it again.

Wow, they would have their Vessel, Truck confiscated, locked up, and heavily fined + loss of Fishing privileges here in GA-USA. Depending on the Judge, a prison sentence likely.
