Throwing / Making a 7lb clay Tall Vase on the wheel

The last lump of clay of the day so I decided to throw a taller vase to finish off.
This size of pot uses a few different techniques like the heel lift at the start and then to lift a lot of clay up quickly a knuckle lift.

When you do a knuckle lift make sure the clay is narrower at the top than at the bottom and try to space your hands so that your inside hand is slightly higher than the outside one so you actually push the clay up rather than squeeze it up.
Same thing when bringing the bottom in, if its narrower at the top and you squeeze it in narrower it'll force the clay upwards rather than inwards.
Cheers, Dan.

Hi Dan, are you even aware of how damned impressive this is to us lesser mortals :)
Nice job!

No problem, I'll take a look.
You're not necessarily doing anything wrong, I cant throw as tall as some of the potters who seem to think thin is best but I'm happy with what I do so don't worry about it.
Dan.

Can you get your hand and arm into it as it's only 3" dia to do a lift from the bottom?
If you can't then you could make it just a bit wider and then instead of lifting for the last time you can collar it in from the base and this should get more height as it narrows and pushes upwards.
I bet you could get the same height from 4lb of clay, I sometimes use twice as much clay but only get the pot a couple of inches taller but much thicker than I'd like.
Cheers, Dan.

When you do a lift try having your outside hand lower than the inside one so thet instead of pinching the clay you push it up from the outside and just guide it from the inside.
It took me a while to figure it out and unfortunately there's no camera angle that'll show it but give it a try.
Dan.

I wanted to thank you Dan, for all of these videos. I eally have learned a ton from watching them and I refer kids all the time at my school to your videos, I absolutely love them myself and now have become quite an AVID thrower if you will. One question for you however, Recently in class when I have been throwing I get my cylinder to about 16.5 inches of height with a 3 inch diameter with roughly 6 pounds of clay. My question is that I cannot seem to get it much higher than 16.5 inches.suggest?

I appreciate the help but yeah I can get my whoe arm inside of there, I am just having an extrordinary hard time getting it any thinner when I pinch an amount of clay from the bottom after my first three pulls it will not go any higher very odd I know... do you ever Raku your pieces? I was inspired by one of your shapes the other day to make a pot like yours and made it exactly the same way but I raku'ed it and it came out magnificent.

How do you avoid clay from bunching up on your knuckle during a knuckle lift? Also, how do you avoid closing in the figure when you bring in the bottom at the beginning of the video. I notice when I throw I can't either get all the clay from the bottom or even out the top through the process of raising walls.
