Video from the World Trade Center shows the Statue of Liberty getting struck by lightning as severe storms moved in over New York City on Wednesday, July 31.

More on the storms: Ferocious storms are sweeping through the tri-state, triggering severe thunderstorm warnings for much of the region -- including all five boroughs of New York City -- ahead of the evening rush. And Storm Team 4 warns the storms might become even more widespread and frequent as the evening commute begins.

Lightning flashed brightly in Rockefeller Center just before 3 p.m., followed by a boom of thunder that would make even the most seasoned New Yorker jump. The risk of severe weather is more widespread for the tri-state area Wednesday than it was a day earlier, when pop-up storms triggered a series of alerts across the region, felling trees in some spots and briefly drenching others.

New York City is in the "more likely" zone for severe weather risk through Wednesday evening, Storm Team 4 says. The severe risk zone stretches north and west, with Long Island just on the cusp of the greater risk area.
