Jervis Bay After Dark

On Friday 10th July 2020, Barfleur Beach in Jervis Bay came to life after dark with an amazing display of bioluminescence (Microalgae Noctiluca scintillans).

This footage was captured on a Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera using a 50mm prime lens. This camera has excellent low light performance however even it was pushed to its limits in order to capture this amazing spectacle. It's only been in the last few years that we've had cameras capable of capturing images like this after dark.

This video is for anyone who wanted to see the bio but missed it, anyone who hasn't seen bio before or anyone who just wants to relive this amazing experience.

I experienced bioluminescence for the first time back in the dark ages when I was in high school. One night, I was at a party on Anna Maria Island and few of us decided to go swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and as we were running down the beach, kicking up the sand, we were amazed as the ground where our feet made contact with the sand would briefly glow blue. At first, some of my friends thought I was drunk and making it up until I demonstrated it for them. You had to hit the sand really hard in order to agitate the plankton in it enough to cause the light to be emitted.

I was lucky enough to see bioluminescence once when I was a teen vacationing at a beach in, of all places, South Carolina. As far as I know, SC is never mentioned in lists of places where bioluminescence is common; but I did see it, and I'll never forget it as a long as I live. It was pure magic.

I had a terrible day today and was so happy to come and see new videos from you. The beautiful footage and calming music helps me feel better, forget, all my problems, and relax. My kids, husband and even my mother watch them now. They really give us all a thirst for travel. Thanks for the work, dedication, and professionalism you put into these videos. They are simply fantastic. By far my favorite travel content creator!!

Nature really doesn’t do a half assed job with blue. So rare but when blue appears, it’s nature’s own heaven.
