But by the time it was combat-ready, WWII had come to an end. Join us as we delve into why this powerful aircraft, initially intended for carrier operations, was too large for the Navy's fleet and ultimately missed its moment of glory. Same thing happened to Grumman Bearcat. The French did use them in Vietnam.

Simple answer... It wasn't needed as much as originally thought. Great as it was, its envisioned mission no longer existed. Hellcats, Corsairs and even FM2's were proving quite capable handling what was left of the Japanese Navy and airpower. The Bearcat just missed out on adding its bite! The end of the war meant many massive reductions in development and production contracts (perhaps a bit short-sighted, all things considered!). Jet propulsion for fighters and piston engined "attack aircraft" were, for a while at least, the way forward. The Skyraider was a much better attack aircraft because it was designed to be so. As a night fighter, the Tigercat had a niche but that was rapidly filled with other aircraft. It was deemed to big to operate from WWII era fleet carriers (which I seriously doubt). Nonetheless, It really never got "it's chance to dance". as changing wartime priorities and developments cut it short. Too bad as I find it the most aesthetic of all Grumman designs and second only to the De Havilland Hornet (which, ironically had its career minimized for many of the same reasons that the Tigercat did)!

I worked 4 fire seasons on Hot Shot crews with the U.S.F.S. A number of these aircraft were modified so that they could carry & drop either fire retardant or water on forest fires. These aircraft were an awesome assistance to us ground pounders. They also used Navy S-2's, B-17s, Consolidated -Vultee 4 engine passenger planes & C-130 Hercules.

My dad was a member of VT-10 during WW2 . He said that at the end of the war they just didn’t seem to need them, but he said that he saw a squadron of them and a squadron of Bearcats replacing the TBM Avenger and F6 Hellcats when he left CV-6 Enterprise in January 1946. My father and I were at an air show in the 1980s and we were fortunate enough to see a fly by of all the Grumman Cats Wildcat Hellcat Tigercat Bearcat and Tomcat flying in formation

It didn't pass carrier landing qualifications. However, I believe the Marines used it for a brief time.

A beautyful aircraft.

The F7F was a fine airplane but the P38 had already been deployed to the Pacific Theater and proven itself a light twin A2A fighter, recon, and munitions (bombs and rockets) delivery platform. The F7F had a late war introduction and was simply not needed.

This was designed to intercept a Kamikaze in a dive.

A very sleek looking prop driven fighter. Truly she was extremely well armed. I'm sure she handled well especially with her speed. 💪🙏

The TigerCat was much like the BearCat. While it was basically the pinnacle of piston driven fighters; it arrived too late for WWII, and was rapidly outclassed by the emerging jet era. In less than 25 years we went from prop planes to landing on the moon, along with mach 2+ fighters and guided missles.

This was the progression from the earlier Grumman XF5F Skyrocket.

My favorite Cat ever!
A bit of trivia, originally the F7F was to be named the Tomcat. But that was considered too risque.
