It seemed so absurd to me that we had to prove such obvious statements in my first university math course. Having gone through some math semesters you see that mathematical rigor is a very important principle. As it gets more complex you want to be absolutely sure that all your previous building blocks are unambiguously defined. I've been through it. At some point a problem statement seems so abstract that only writing down the exact related definitions will help your intuition kick in :)
