great review, indeed an interesting year for both races. Loved Hall's banner moment. Good on him!

At least we know Jim and Tom are actually human after all 😂 I'm sure they'll be back with vengeance though 💪🏻

Interesting stuff. I hadn't seen clips of Tom Evans starting the race. He does look a bit like he's feeling the pressure or just not quite himself there.

Almost didn't recognise you with your top done up, after RTTS 😅

It's definitely hard to understand what happened at the head of the UTMB mens race especially considering how Katie Scheide and Ruth Croft both absolutely nailed the race (and haven't been given the exposure they deserve for it).

I suspect Tom almost over-prepared and simply forgot to go out and enjoy himself. I felt sick for him as I followed the advice on preparation he's been giving out on his podcast as closely as I could and it worked for me like a dream at the TORX130 last week. I'm sure he will have his day at UTMB.

Francois D'Haene's victory at TDG was stunning considering he dropped from Hardrock a month or so ago having not sufficiently recovered from an injury. Was he seriously attempting a Hardrock / TDG double?

Maybe give Toms podcast a listen to, he talks through what happened

With Jim, considering his career wins, he never has to win UTMB again, and because it's a little more technical than his best race, he may never feel the need to finish again. For Tom, he still had one of the best seasons in ultra running this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he had some niggles too. In that clip you had of him it reminds me of when I had a minor injury and was focusing on form to try to not further injure it.

We've done analysis of the race and as far as we can tell Tom was super smooth, he was not pushing, but had a sudden power drop starting from Bertone, so did Germain, but his drop was from Champex-Lac and a few others but not Pau who had a continuous effort degradation until he dropped out. Looking at the common denominator, everyone of those losing power, including Jim was on high carb strategy and what no-one tells that from a number upwards, carbs won't help but actually stop you from performing. The digestion system is similar to the metabolic system, it needs to be used at a % of its capacity. If you want to go deeper into the topic, reach out.

Once they know they're not going to podium, they can't be bothered so they dnf. An elite can't be seen to cross the line in 30 hours because it wouldn't look good for the aponsors. It's pathetic really.

All the complaints about stomach issues every year is also an excuse. At that level it shouldn't happen. Everyone eats way too many gels, too much sugar and the awful noodle soup, you literally have to dodge the noodle puke piles, but they still eat it. More normal food is the answer.
