I love these so much. My Granddad was only 15 when he joined up with The Irish Fusiliers in WW1. He was a hard man, in the war he crawled into enemy nests and lines to silently cut throats. His parents survived The Famine and had to be tough people to do that. Grandpa was born in 1898. He came all alone to Canada, at the age of 23 when he was de-mobbed in Ohmah. Imagine all of this. A boy. And he worked in lumber camps in Ontario and farm work in Saskatchewan to pay for his brothers'passage. He had one friend to speak Irish with, Sherlock Hemlock, who won his wife in a card game. I think of him every day, and am so thankful that he settled in Canada, not America where the racism against the Irish was so terrible. I would rather be dead that an American..
