Tony Blair planned to end child poverty by 2020. That programme had stalled before coronavirus hit.

Now this year, the pandemic means some of the most disadvantaged children in the country face falling further behind, not just financially, but in their development too.

Newsnight’s been given research from the Sutton Trust which shows that in England two-thirds of nurseries, pre-schools and other provision for the under 5s were shut during lockdown - and that a third of settings in the most deprived areas now face closure for good.

The Children’s Commissioner for England tells us we need to ensure young children aren’t set back for the rest of their childhood as a result of what’s happened.

UK Editor Katie Razzall reports.

Well this functions as another reference point. I find myself very grateful I never bore any children. I have watched friends that have young children or infants struggle tremendously during this time. I don't foresee that lessening anytime soon especially in the United States as our cases are skyrocketing. Bringing life into this world is a tremendously serious decision and simply because one can make life does not mean one should make life. Best of luck to all the individuals that chose to make life.

Therapeutic and preventive measures should never bring more harm than the illness itself. Their aim should be to protect the risk groups, without endegearing the availibilty of medical care and the health of the whole population, as it is occurring with devastating consequences.

Those in the scientific and medical praxis are experiencing the secondary damages of the Corona-measures on their patients on a daily basis

Boris wants everyone back to work, tho many have lost jobs!. To ensure this he wants all children back to school, tho he seems to lack undetsanding this should include childcare facilties. Which is needed for many to work. Considering he has has many children with different women you would think he knew this, it gos to show he has no input or understanding in raising or caring for children....smh

This is exactly why you NEED government to tax and redistribute wealth to communities. If not, money flows out and even charitable organizations can’t help because they are also dry.

I feel the plight of childrens provisions in early years. I almost had forgetton how i managed. I had two under fives attending nursery while i completed my general nurses training. I am so grateful for the wonderful care given to them during those formative years. Later on the placements were taken away from nurses and given to doctors children. I had left by then so it did not bother me. Its really, really hard for families with both parents working . So many groups need this type if support. The government knows that our children are the
future. We cannot ignore Social care, and child care provisions. Majority of our children comes from poor economic backgrounds and some of these places are far from
affordable. Thank you for taking care of the young ones who are utterly vulnerable!

Let’s repent for the kingdom of God is at hand. As long as we are still breathing the doors to repentance are open. Let’s repent while we can!

Kings Worthy; deprived!! Some years ago I was in a pub in Winchester. On the three tables around me; a couple of female barristers with a Supreme court judge, the producer of Newsnight and a couple of female BBC journos, the other table folks from a Random House publishers. My table included a serving and a retired general. Most of these people catch the train from Winchester into London each day. That subsidised nurseries are closing in the area is a disaster for these people more than anyone and perhaps explains why this item made it on to Newsnight in the first place.

Both kids and parents lose out. Failure to suppress the virus will only prolong the problem for many more years. This is unacceptable.
