10 Awesome Sci-Fi Movies That Never Got A Sequel

While enormous franchises have dominated the sci-fi film genre for decades, not every great sci-fi movie is meant to be a part of one. Some films are so well done, and tell such a complete story, that a follow-up would be unnecessary — and often, if one is attempted, it’s a total failure.
Other sci-fi movies open the door for expansion, but never have the opportunity to explore it. While some have been box office flops, others have been poorly received by critics, and at least one even lost the interest of its original director. Here are 10 awesome sci-fi movies that never got a sequel.

John Carter and Serenity really stand out as underrated by the general public. As a Trek purist when i was younger i scoffed at a lot of other Sci-fi so missed out on Firefly's original run but watched it years after it was cancelled. I found out how wrong i'd been and absolutely loved the show.

John Carter was a great movie .Never could understand why it wasn't a success. i read somewhere that it was poorly promoted upon release

Oblivion and Valerian were AWESOME! John Carter and Serenity are beyond awesome. Serenity makes me sad because it was the end of Firefly.

Dune was ok but have you ever read the book? It has over 800 pages, try compressing that into a 2 hr movie!!!

When I was young I read all the Valerian cartoons in french (original language) and they were so exciting. It would have been nice to see the sci-fi flair of Besson being used to continue many more of the episodes. Valerian is still one of the best sci-fi for a long period and The Fifth Element remains one of the best ever. Besson makes movies very stylish.

Indeed Firefly should have remained many seasons as it really opened new aspects and explored topics differently. How simple people become heroes with an ever growing cause.

I remember seing David Lynch "Dune" 38 years ago, and i love the movie, and still do. I have it in VHS, and once a year, myself and my old friends from Highschool join together on a sunday afternoon, in a " secret" location far from our wives children and grandchildren, with lots of Beer, popcorns and doritos just to watch Dune in this huge flat screen.
And its worth every single second of that Masterpiece.

I love Firefly and Serenity. Fox was stupid to cancel it!

I loved John Carter - it definitely didn't deserve the criticism it got. Upgrade is a great film and Valerian is a brilliant film also.

5th element should've been a trilogy. It's great that it was self contained and left one satisfied, but it would've nice to see more exploits of corbin dallas

Galaxy Quest was a comedic masterpiece. I don't think a sequel would do it any justice. I feel it would take something pure, and make a ridiculous spectacle of it.

I actually loved all of these movies. I’m so glad Serenity and Firefly were on the list—one of the best. I would love to see a reboot of it for sure.

Valerian was a visual masterpiece. Unfortunately, the actor playing Valerian was a total fail! With the proper actor, this could have been one of the greatest sci fi movies of all time.

John Carter (of Mars) was intended to compete with Marvel but got screwed over by Disney who refused to promote it after they acquired Marvel. The only movie depicted above that I have not seen and loved is Chronicle.

All excellent films that I love! But isn't it nice though to have some films as stand alones? Not everything has to have sequels, trilogies, series...

There's also Flash Gordon (1980) too - that should have had a sequel or two! 😎🤩👍
