3 CARDINAL RULES OF NEGOTIATING A SALARY CONTRACT #AskCheeky

(*Write the word "Hired" in a comment below and we'll send you our top 20 Industry Positions Guide For PhDs)

- Set your walkaway number. Your walkaway number is the minimum salary that you're willing to accept. You need to set this number before you get a referral, before you go on an informational interview, before an any contact you have with a potential employer, and before you become emotionally involved in a particular position or company.

- Don’t agree to any salary number until you get the contract in hand. They will try to catch you off guard whether on the phone screen or during the site visit. If you say yes it's very hard to come back from that. So make sure that you get a contract in hand before you start negotiating and before you give your counteroffer.

- Negotiate your base salary first. Employers will try to make things unclear, try to ‘muddy the waters’ by offering you a signing bonus or stock options. While those are things that should be negotiated, you must always negotiate the base salary first and then move on to other items.

Wow. I had no idea that even a $5000 difference in your initial salary made such an impact over the life of your career. Great info...

Hello,

In your number two recommendation, you stated that one should make sure they have a written contract with the salary offer before negotiation. But you must accept then you get the offer letter. So at what point can you begin negotiation if you have already said that you accept.
