Did you know that there is a region in Italy where most people speak German? South Tyrol is a fascinating, multicultural place in the heart of Europe. The region is located in the north of Italy and the inhabitants have an Italian passport, but many of them are German native speakers. In our first video from South Tyrol, you'll see us interviewing people on the street in Bolzano, trying local food, and meeting Moritz, a German-speaking Italian. He gives us insights into his everyday life, where he speaks 2-3 languages every day.

I’m from south tyrol, an this guy was sooo right about what he said in the beginning, that it’s always soo complicated to explain to everyone why i speak german when i’m from italy. I lived in Berlin for a year and i’ve been asked this question ALL THE TIME. And people are always soo confused. My Boyfriend is Ladin… thats even worse to explain to other people because the language literally only exists in south tyrol and some other small valleys in northern Italy and in Switzerland.

Ich komme aus Tirol 🇦🇹, Nordtirol um genau zu sein 😅, liebe Italien (habe angefangen Italienisch zu lernen) und/oder Südtirol gleichermaßen. Ich kann mich mit Südtirolern z.B. besser unterhalten als wie mit Wienern z.B.😅.
Habe Freunde aus verschiedenen Regionen Italiens und natürlich eben auch aus Südtirol und meiner Meinung nach ist der jetztige Stand echt super für alle! Hi, I am from the region and I wanted to point to a little correction, hum, the region is actually the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region, and Südtirol is a province inside of that. This may seem a little thing, but actually it is quite important to understand the way in which the region works and the reason behind its long contested belonging. This is the only region in fact where its provinces that have autonomy, and not the region in which they are located. Before WWI Trentino (also sometimes called Welschtirol), was forcibly merged into the Tyrol county under the Hapsburgs. Before the 1800s it was an autonomous Italian speaking principality tied to the Hapsburg kingdom, but after Napoleon divided Tyrol into the current region to the brief Italian kingdom, the Hapsburgs regained possession of the area and cancelled every autonomy the Italian speaking part had before. In WWI Italy claimed the areas of the previous Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, including German speaking Bozen. Since many German speaking people were unhappy about the arrangement (in a reversed fashion than before where it was Italian speakers who were in a German speaking majority county), the Italian government granted autonomy to both the Italian speaking part (Trentino) and the mostly German speaking part (Südtirol). This was actually favoured by German speakers because in that way they were not a minority anymore, since the governing body is not the region (overwhelmingly Italian speaking), but the province (60something German speaking). So, the region is actually a majority Italian speaking region, while the autonomous province of Südtirol is a majority German speaking province (while Trentino is 95% Italian speaking).

Ich bin in Verona geboren, obwohl ich ein gebürtiger Deutscher bin, und auf meinen Reisen durch Nordostitalien habe ich auch Südtirol gesehen. Absolut atemberaubend; ich erinnere mich, dass ich so viele Fantasiegeschichten im Kopf hatte, als ich es zum ersten Mal sah (ich war 4 Jahre alt ^_^;). Jetzt, nach 16 Jahren, möchte ich es wieder besuchen.

Moritz is so good and charming host. I like the way he is describing his region. I was studying Italian Philology and for me this is amazing that there are so many different languages, dialects, customs, food and despite of this people can collaborate. For me Italy is the most fascinating and beautiful country in the world. Regarding what Moritz said about Italian speakers who don't speak German - I think it's also because German is more difficult than Italian. Anyway, great video!

What many foreigners fail to understand is that Italians are a very diverse population. I grew up at the border with Switzerland, and my culture may have a lot in common with someone from Naples or Sicily, but we are also very different: dialects, typical food, way of living... It's not just the "extremes" of German speaking or French speaking minorities in Süd Tyrol/Alto Adige or Val d'Aosta

South Tyrol sound a nice place to visit plus you can hear German and Italian spoken.Pretty old towns beautiful mountains with snow, lakes and rivers and lots of forests with green fields.

Das mit der Identität hat mein Schwager aus Südtirol mal gut erklärt: Bis auf das, dass er nen italienischen Pass hat und in Österreich lebt und arbeitet, ist er Tiroler ;) ganz einfach.

Als jemand der Deutsch und Italienisch gut versteht, fand ich diesen Dialekt sehr natürlich. Für mich war der Einfluss der süddeutschen Dialekten das schwierigste teil beim Verstehen, denn ich nur Hochdeutsch kann. Danke für noch ein tolles Video :)
