I loved this film. I love Aretha Franklin's music but after watching this film, now I love Aretha Franklin. I didn't really know much about her. Now I have a greater respect for her and admiration.

All those who are saying ‘couldn’t they find an African American woman to play Aretha’ didn’t say a word when Morgan Freeman got oscar nominated for playing Nelson Mandela, or when Meryl Streep won an Oscar for playing Margaret Thatcher, or when Rami Malek won an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury.... plus there are zero roles in Hollywood for black British women to BE PLAYED by black British women. Some of y’all don’t care about diversity, you care about gatekeeping.

Today I saw RESPECT. All the actors from GENIUS: ARETHA and RESPECT did a fabulous job. I actually prefer the GENIUS: ARETHA version, since they had more time to delve into the storylines, but both casts did a fabulous job. Much RESPECT to the Queen of Soul.

This Movie was GREAT... the Talent was Cynthia did a Phenomenal job capturing the Soul vocally of Queen Aretha, while still staying true to her own artistry. I can definitely appreciate the FULLNESS and TONE of Cynthia’ voice.
It was Heartwarming seeing them cast Duranice Pace (RIP)...

Overall this was a GREAT Series of Aretha Franklin, and “RESPECT” staring (J.HUD) want be able to Top or Compare. Excellency Job National Geographic

Seriously, does Cynthia Erivo have to take all the roles from African-American actresses. Bad enough she played a singing Harriet Tubman, but now she is playing Aretha Franklin even though she does not look or sound anything like her. Erivo sound like herself and she loves to show off her voice.

Jennifer Hudson would've been a much better choice for this role. Not only because she's lived the struggle and can bring that authenticity to the screen, but she can stand in the shadow of Aretha better than any known celebrity I've seen and heard.

Cynthia is a great Broadway singer but vocally she's not given me Aretha at all here. Her tone throws me off. It lacks something. When Aretha sings those songs she possess so much power, soul and attitude. I'm not getting that from Cynthia at all here.
