I’ve always liked the “mangled, blood and viscera covered skull” beneath the mask, like the protogen parts are augmentations put in place to save a dying creature.

The way the ZOR protogen lore makes it sound, they remove the whole chunk of face replace it with a nanite visor that has its blood and brain behind it, because its part of the biomechanical body part replacements

I asked a protogen this question, to which they responded "NANOMACHINES SON!"

Also Beta, nanites can change form but they can't just make them all dissappear and reappear. Removing the visor would kill the Protogen or Primagen

Beta is that one guy that actually knows the species lore

Protogens would die if you took the visor off, same goes for Primagens. However what's really under the visor is the Proto or Prima's biological face but with technology fused with it. Also inside a Protogen visor is a sort of goo that repairs the nanite visor if it cracks. (Nanites are the small computers that make up Protogen and Primagen visors.)

I do find it kinda funny to think that protogens are mechsuits for the extremely small critters such as spiders and beetles.

Thats mostly just my love for biology flaring up though.
