The Mask don't actually give the Toa their Elemental power. It is actually innate within their species like the Mataron. Their kanohi masks give them special powers like Shielding, Levitation, Underwater Breathing, Speed, X-ray vision, Strength and more.

Best aesthetic to me. Toa Mata were my favorite because they're all basically Terminator flavored Power Rangers. Their spindly bodies made them look more believable to me for some reason.

0:00 we do know it:

In the time before time, on the mysterious island of Mata Nui, six canisters washed ashore on a golden beach and new and powerful legends were born. Tahu, courageous Toa of Fire; Lewa, agile Toa of Air; Gali, noble Toa of Water; Kopaka, powerful Toa of Ice; Onua, wise Toa of Earth; teamed with Pohatu, mighty Toa of Stone. They battled the darkness of evil Makuta and the terrible menaces he unleashed that threatened the Toa, and the world.

these cans were just the very best. i can't get over how perfect they got it on the first try. theyre simple, classy even. given the usual tropes of kids toy presentation at the time, it was really unusual to see such slick, understated packaging. the silvery grey combined with the muted metallic color top made such a statement. as a child seeing these in the shelves, i was immediately taken in by how mysterious, and quiet they were, which kinda mirrored bionicle as a whole back in the first era.

as a child of the 90s. i grew up in the era of X-TREME, where garish and loud and in-your-face attitude was the meta, and then in the middle of all that there's this clandestine, solem, lord-of-the-ringsy setup with sentient robots who talk like shakespeare. i had never seen anything like it, and to this day, i still haven't.

After almost 2 decades i managed to get my hands on these guys. They aren't the best bionicle had to offer but they are iconic none the less.

Keep up with it bro. With this production value you’ll make it big.

I know they're pretty limited, but the Toa Mata and Nuva have all and will always be my favorite sets. Nostalgia? Maybe. But the colors and masks were just so, so good.

Bionicle will never be forgotten ever.

G1 Masks have individual abilities. They do not grant elemental powers, but they unlock the one Toa actually has, so maskless Toa can't use his/her element.

This is probably the most nostalgic line of toys for me. A couple of years ago, I bought a 2001 Kopaka and Nuju to keep on display. I might just have to complete the original collection at some point.

Nice video, man!

God I can't believe that Bionicle went from saving Lego to being canceled, to a pitiful reboot, to failing again. What I would do to live in the timeline that they were never canceled.

My major complaint about these guys is one single piece: The torso. Compared to the way the Rahi are built, I think the torso piece really limited the creativity, as well as over standardized the Toa. Just a year or so before, LEGO made the Slizer bots, which also used very similar construction techniques including having the torso house a lot of gear systems, except these had torsos made of multiple pieces, which allowed for greater variation between the elements. Breaking it into just two pieces would already be enough, top and bottom. But oh well. I am way too nostalgic about these guys to be stuck on that.

Akamai might look weaker, but keep in mind that he got all the battle-oriented mask powers, Shielding, Speed, and Strength, and he also has Pohatu's foot extension, so his kicks'll probably hurt a lot. I also like to think of his other hand as a skull hammer/club. The man has a fricking claw ribcage and shoulder pads too, so he's built like a tank.

Got the mask lore incorrect, but good review.

my very first Bionicle was the quick Toa Mata of Stone Pohatu!, he was always so cool to me how differently he was made, and when the Nuva came out and I saw the new armor and the claws I imediately told my Mom that my favorite Lego just got more Cooler!.

Pohatu is just the Best Toa, Ever!.

Man I remember these. I had the red one. It felt like my most valuable toy, don't know why. The attachable sword blew my 8 year old mind back then :D

It's sad to think we will never see anything like _Bionicle_ from LEGO ever again. These toys were such a major part of my childhood. The story, the characters, the lore of the _Bionicle_ universe were all fantastic, and the comic books were the best reading material LEGO ever published. You know, I like to think that Bionicle inspired the armor permutations in _Halo 3, _ since many of the helmets introduced in that game and beyond look very similar to _Bionicle_ masks... the EOD, Rogue, GUNGNIR, and GRD helmets in particular.

This is one of the better reviews I’ve seen on Bionicle sets. Most people that do reviews find out that the good guys are the Toa and the the bad guy is Makuta and that they live on Mata Nui. But you have actually done your research on Bionicle and you know stuff like mask names. Nice job! 👍
