Comparing Straight-5 - VR5 - V5 Engine | Pros & Cons of Each Explained

Straight Five Cylinder Engine:
The straight-five engine, also referred to as an inline-five engine, abbreviated I5, is a piston engine with five cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankshaft.

Straight-five engines are typically shorter than straight-six engines, making them easier to fit transversely in an engine bay. Straight-five engines are smoother running than straight-four engines, shorter than straight-six engines, and narrower than V engines and flat engines.

VR5 Engine:
Volkswagen introduced the first V5 engine, though this engine is not a true twin-bank V engine, but rather a VR5, or staggered bank straight-5 engine, and therefore not a true V5.

Volkswagen’s VR5 engine was a unique piece of automotive history Developed in the 1990s. While functioning much like an inline-five engine, the VR5 was its own animal. With three cylinders on one side and two on the other, the VR5 required a whole bunch of complex engineering to keep it balanced and innovative design decisions to get it to breathe.

The interesting thing is the cylinders are at a 15-degree angle. To get the 15-degree cylinders not to contact each other, they pushed the cylinder outboard and offset them.

V5 Engine:
The V5 engine was developed as a direct result of major changes to the regulations for the World Championship motorcycle road racing 500 cc class for the 2002 season.

The name of the class was modified to MotoGP, and while two-stroke engines remained limited to 500 cc and four cylinders, four-stroke engines were now allowed to be as large as 990cc and from three to six cylinders which led many teams to switch to four-stroke designs.

I drive a 2.5L I5 Jetta, and gotta say I love it. It's not the fastest accelerating reasonably priced car out there by any means, however the highway capacity and sound are above the competition in my opinion.

I own 2 Jetta Sportwagons with 5 cylinder engines. Fair gas mileage, smooth, dependable, and no balance shafts, love them.
I had a 1982 Scirocco, great condition except high mileage on engine and transmission. I had bought the car new, and truly loved it. My son, who is now a Master Tech with VW and Mercedes, and I put a 5 cylinder Audi engine in it. Super fun pocket rocket.

6:20 Finally, the VR engine is correctly described. The VR is German for Verkürzt Reihen or loosely translated as Shorten Inline in English. The reason why it wasn't called the VR5 but V5 is that for marketing purposes. The word VR5 is too mouthful and too complex for salespeople, and only designers, engineers and enthusiasts can describe it correctly. Double the VR5 then you get a W10 engine in the 72° V bank.

7:58 That's the incorrect picture of the VR5 4-valve.

I have Volvo 2.4T 5cyl (B5254T) with very smooth power build-up and a lovely drum sound on acceleration! Absolutely love it. Used to have an 850TDI which sounded a little more brutal. Wouldn't prefer anything else except for a powerful American V8 perhaps :)

The ford Focus ST & RS you used both have 4 cylinders in. I know as I have the Focus ST with the 5 pot engine and it is by far the best sounding 5 pot. The RS shares the same engine just with uprated internals to handle the extra horsepower.

Very interesting and expertly presented. I look at all these engineering marvels and their complexities, yet I regard the fact that they are mostly all going the way of obsolescence because of the electric motor, powered by either batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. I suppose there will always be a niche for IC engines, but if so, the fuel will not likely be hydrocarbons, but either hydrogen or ammonia.

I get nostalgic about all this, but this is the way of progress. I love the sound of the racing versions of these power plants. Oh well, I'm not going to be on this earth to experience very much of all that anyway.
