Canon RF 24mm f1.8 Shows Canon's Flawed Lens Strategy

Показать описание
Reviewing the Canon RF 24mm f1.8 Macro IS lens. A lot of youtubers are going to choose this over the 15-35mm f2.8. Much cheaper and lighter, more Toneh, what's not to love? I will find something not to love :) We'll compare it to the legendary Voigtlander 20mm f3.5 to see if this lens has any "character". 3d pop, micro contrast etc. Canon EOS R still holding up in 2022.

We'll also talk about Canon's flawed lens strategy for the RF mount. Huge, expensive L lenses, and super budget f1.8 primes, and what I would do instead of I was president of the world.

If you buy today's gear through my affiliate links, Canon will hire some old German and Russian lens makers who can pass on some wisdom about lenses with character. And how to make Borscht.

This channel makes me so happy. The humour, the familiar Canadian accent that surely must sound like Terrance & Phillip to non Canadian ears, the constant references to Toneh… how did I even have happiness before this channel?

I am actually using this on my R7. It's effective focal length is 38mm on this camera which makes this lens very close to human eye normal. If you haven't tried it on a R7 give it a shot and see how you like it. I am very much enjoying your channel btw. Thanks!

Now you own an R5mii, so a comparison between Rf24mm f1.8 VS RF16mm F2.8 is desired. Which one is better for a Vlog? Low light? Stabilization along with

I wanted to get this but Canon files are impossible to edit. Once transported to the editing program the laptop fans take off and the laptop catches fire. I ended up getting a Sony instead, that is doing great. I have no idea what PC on earth can handle a 50GB 2 minute Canon video.

Thank you for this video! I'm gonna switch to Voigtlander.

Nikon's bread-and-butter f1.8 lenses are far superior.

''Agree with the importance of character and 3d pop, nowadays all sharp but flat.... could you compare the old 28mm EF 2.8 or the 24mm L with the new RF 24mm?

Canon's decision to not allow 3rd party lens development, and insane pricing, makes them a non-starter for me.

Even through my aging eyes, viewed on my phone, in portrait mode, the Canon is far superior . I was very impressed with the Toneh at the beginning defore you stopped it down .

First of all--that Clog 3 looked REAL good in the CU. Nice job with the grade, there. 2ndly: You are correct that the 3D pop exists and is apparent on the Voit. The comparisons you did illustrated this very well--but, you were also correct that the focal length was affecting the perception of depth (the main factor in the things you mentioned like the keyboard and chair distance perception). The differences that I saw were contrast, light fall-off, and wider color & luminance values, almost like the Voit allowed more dynamic range. That, I believe, is what 3D pop is. The Canon lens washed everything out, like a flatter grading curve.

The background/horizon is more stable on the GoPro -- since that is what it stabilizes for, but the subject (you) are more stable in the Canon....

Much like hotdogs, I keep coming back to this channel, knowing full well what I'm about to consume 😑

Last June I was at a huge family gathering and the event photographer was sporting that 28-70 T2 Canon monster of a glass. It looked imprude...

I think 3D pop actually has to do with LESS toneh, ironically. JUST enough of it. Enough that the edges of your subject (you) are sharp, but enough toneh to blur the background otherwise as much as possible. You should see if there is a "zone of maximized 3D pop" PER LENS. I dunno

The problem with Cannon lenses you are discussing happens often with older established companies. The upper management is usually older, and not in touch with what younger customers in their market segment need or want.
Business Class 101 should include timelines to retire upper management.

3D pop is a myth just like "wider scene" among the audiophiles who buy $5000/foot cables
