LAPD Restricts Officer Magazine Capacity

On September 29th, 2023, the LAPD restricted the handgun magazine capacity of its officers to 18 rounds, although they are still allowed to carry multiple magazines. I'm currently looking into why they did this.

They should have to carry the CA compliant 10 round magazines 😜

The longer magazines are 30 rounders also used with the KelTec Sub2000

They should only be allowed 10 round mags. If a citizen has a restriction, so should potential tyrants.

Sig? Naw the lapd has enough random gun shots already.

One thing to also look at, is weapon use in a confined area. Having a magazine sticking out catching on things could increase your reaction time to a threat, weather it be a 30 round pistol mag or a 40 round AR mag.

It makes sense if the idea is to keep police equipment standardized, and avoid problems with equipment. Imagine that extended mag sticking out of your holster. Good lever for some one to grab onto, get caught in your gear, seat belt, and how does it work when sitting in your car?

My Glock 17 Clone had 10 standard G17 capacity magazines but I only load them to 15, so I have 150 rounds on tap ready to go!

I don't know for sure but if I had to guess I would say it's probably a reliability issue standard capacity magazines tend to work more reliably than your extended capacity or another guess would be it looks scary to the public

Usually by the tenth bullet the target is incapacitated. It's unwieldy too.

It's no longer a magazine if you use a belt-fed weapon

I’m going with common sense on this one. If they cannot hit the target with 18 rounds, then they probably need to be permanently desked or placed on traffic control duties.

Since the magazine sticks out so far, maybe it would be easier for someone to grab the gun out of the cop’s holster?

A lot of people are arguing, if a civilian can't have this, then the government shouldn't either. But personally, I think that restricting the police to put them on equal grounds with civilians is extremely deconstructive. By making the police less well armed, we're doing nothing to reinforce our own second amendment rights. Instead, we should focus on abolishing laws that restrict civilian access to firearms. Demanding that the police be less well armed isn't doing anything, except telling the powers that be that we're willing to come to tolerate our rights being taken away, so long as LEOs also have to go through the same restrictions.

I trained a good number of police officers several years ago, when they were transitioning into semi autos. These guys really good hitting things with their revolvers. They could not, however, hit the broadside of a barn with a head full of Buckshot when they transitioned in the semi-autos. It was more often the case that I had to retrain them how to shoot a pistol so that they could learn to think of this semi-auto and terms that made it work for them. Let me say this, people who cannot hit their target with the first 3 to 5 rounds fired, shouldn't, in any case, have 30 plus rounds to play with. I couldn't tell you how many times I had to tell them that holes are near will not suffocate the opponent. The nine millimeter pistol does not react well with the damn, it also is not particularly powerful there is no excuse for how bad they're shooting. However, the purpose for defending yourself with a pistol is to do the greatest amount of permanent damage with the least number of rounds fired. Which was being accomplished by several cartridges other than the 9 mm. 357 Magnum, the 357 sig, 9x23, 38 super, .40 Smith. Every single one of them provides a minimum of twenty-five to thirty percent greater permanent wound capacity, per round fired that the nine millimeter does accept in one series of criteria. Those criteria include a barrel lengths that exceeds 4 inches, usually about four-and-a-half. A + P or + p + 9 mm hollow point of about 124 grains of weight. So that the muzzle velocity is somewhere above about 1275 feet per second, preferably about 1, 300 to 1400 feet per second. Which functionally puts it into the lower Magnum class of 357 caliber bullet. The 45 also provides a much greater winning capacity per round fired. But why choose the best cartridge. Especially when caliber, that's specifically is designed to be equal to fight stoppers in history no, are being replaced because the FBI wants to save money. That that's the FBI's reasoning. They lied to you about terminal ballistics on a regular basis in their report. If you cannot handle the 40 Smith or any of a myriad of another calibers, you don't have any business during a firearm for defense. Especially if you were in the law enforcment field.

Probably an image thing like you said. There is not any reliability issue and you would only really insert a 31/31+2 as your reload; I highly doubt an officer of the LAPD was casually carrying with a 33 *holstered*. Maybe a close second reason would be reholstering or other handling issues. I'm kinda surprised they issue Glock 17/45 mags with the + baseplates in the first place...

Because of the California state law limited it for everyone... And by an officer carrying a one would violate state law...
