Guthrie is a combination of a most skilled shredder, a master of all techniques and a Hendrix-like soulful improviser.
He's the absolute top of guitar playing

I love the way he keeps up with your transcription without deviating !

Guthrie is amazing but I also noticed there's an awesome interplay between him and the bassist. When the solo really builds up and Guthrie is doing trills or long bend notes, the bass player immediately takes over and fills the space with sick 16th note lines. They're fully in the zone together as a band.

I love Hans realizing there’s a moment happening and he needs to witness it up close.

00:57 the transition at section 34 is just phenomenal... Definitly the Gandalf of solo guitar.

Who on Earth thinks Guthrie sucks? You're a master transcriber to handle that one Levi

Guthrie is incredible, saw him play with Steven Wilson. The Solo in Drive Home is phenomenal.

0:58 an important detail, it appears he's actually singing the notes as well, a tip he suggests to do while improvising. Quite impressive

I do not know anyone saying that Guthrie "sucks" - maybe he's the most appreciated guitar-player within the guitar-community. Everything he plays has intention and perfect pacing. The fast lines make harmonic sense and he resolves the lines like a champ.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard something so beautiful played on a guitar. I’m totally blown away.

Zimmer's childlike smile throughout the stint says it all

Govan...Boring as usual. There will be nothing left him, no composition, no notable solo.

He does not suck, but Allan Holdsworth is still the best electric guitarist on planet Earth, truth be told.

The phrasing... The melodic ideas... He never plays those tired and cliche licks... I hate this man... lol

Dude it’s epic you transcribed this! There is so much greatness here to learn from.

Guthrie is untouchable. Perhaps if you picked one genre or two, you could find a guitar player that could play right along with him. But he leaves them in the dust once it’s something else other than what they’re comfortable with.

AND, he improvises it to boot.

I love his story about working at McDonald's back when he was a struggling musician. What a tale to behold. This guy's a GENIUS.

Guthrie is a ridiculously skilled guitar player, and an insanely great musician and improviser, but the background part to this screams “melodic solo with minimal shredding, ” the way my ears were like “what is this man doing?” Just didn’t fit well with what’s behind him. Guthrie is an insane musician and player, but this solo is not particularly good. Is it really hard to do and impressive? Yeah, but it doesn’t fit that well.

Gotta have someone that looks at you like Hans does at Guthrie.

It’s a nice straw man argument. No one— save for a few— says Guthrie sucks. Mostly, people just respond to those who say he’s the greatest of all time— and the best guitarist on the planet. Neither of which is true. The push back against Guthrie is merely a response to those who have anointed him as some undisputed king of the guitar.
