NASA Revealed 4 Next Space Stations Generation!
The International Space Station is approaching the end of its operational life, prompting various organizations to compete for the opportunity to succeed it. Among the contenders, four space stations emerge as the most promising candidates to take its place.
Let’s discover who they are in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
The four candidates I’ve chosen to discuss today are based on two key criteria: their potential to succeed the ISS and their capacity to revolutionize space exploration.
Let’s start with the first contender—SpaceX. For those unaware, SpaceX is not only dominating space launches and planning missions to the Moon and Mars, but it is also working on building its own space station. Surprisingly, this space station will be constructed using Starships—yes, the same spacecraft designed for interplanetary missions.
NASA Revealed 4 Next Space Stations Generation!
At first glance, using Starship as a space station might sound unconventional, but it’s actually a well-suited choice. Starship was originally designed to carry hundreds of passengers on extended journeys to Mars, meaning it already includes advanced life support systems that meet the requirements of a space station.
One of Starship’s standout features is its construction material: stainless steel. Unlike other materials commonly used in spacecraft, stainless steel is highly durable, resistant to corrosion, and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of space, including extreme temperatures and micrometeorite impacts. This makes it ideal for long-term use in orbit. Additionally, stainless steel is relatively easy to maintain and repair compared to more complex materials, further increasing its suitability as a space station building block.
NASA Revealed 4 Next Space Stations Generation!
So how would SpaceX turn Starship into a space station? The concept involves reviving a long-forgotten but visionary design—a rotating wheel space station. Instead of a single Starship, SpaceX plans to link multiple Starships in a circular formation that rotates about its axis. This rotation would create artificial gravity, addressing one of the key challenges of long-term space habitation: microgravity. Unlike the ISS, which operates in a microgravity environment, a rotating station could simulate Earth-like gravity, mitigating health issues like muscle atrophy and bone density loss that astronauts experience in weightless conditions.

To be resolved, thank you.

Bezos’ ultimate ambition is to have orbiting space colonies and to transfer industrial processes into space. They’re laudable aims but so far progress at B O has been lethargic. The test firings of New Glenn and the BE7 lunar landing engine have been successful but Spacex is just so far ahead as to be practically uncatchable. We’re likely to see a Spacex space station well before B O launch anything that substantial into orbit. A happy, healthy and safe new year to all space enthusiasts. The next few years should be very interesting.

Blue origin shouldn't even be in a conversation presented here until they become motivated and learn to combine ideas with others...let's get real for once eh

Good to see work done on space stations, the need will be great. We will need them around planets/moons we wish to explore. Also we will need them to establish bases around asteroids to be mined.

Interesting, but you forgot Axiom. They will probably have their first module up before anyone else.

Starlab is "same idea, different decade". Starship has good idea, but only 1/3 of each ship is usable. Vast Hub is like Legos in space and would be the best idea.

The world is going through another technology revolution on all fronts. There is no perfect plan and as humans, we learn by trial and error, yet still achieving mostly successes in the end.

❤spaceX by far has the most potential of all...I would consider a joint venture with Inflatable modules with the Star Ship

A non-artificial gravity space station would only be an interim solution because it is pretty clear that without constant gravity even if only 1/3 g, we won't be able to keep people in space without damage to their health. First we use rotation gravity while we develop engine technology that can provide 1g acceleration for extended periods. Chemical rockets won't work in space even if they will continuento be used to haul stuff up the well. Once we have these 2 technologies we will be able to move around the solar system.

I honestly can't believe how much people go on about New Glenn's roll in the future when BO hasen't even properly made it to space in over 2 decades of operation. Still got to wait until next week for proof of anything.

The two that are a long lasting practical solution are SpaceX Starship and Vast 🙂

Most experiments and possible future manufacturing doesn't require artificial gravity and actually needs the lack of gravity.

Just give it to spaceX. You know it's going to be light years ahead of the competition and lower cost

Four projects, each more interesting than the other, NASA's goal will be to allow each of these concepts to coexist and to be able to assemble into a single or double entity. Allow the compatibility of the different concepts on a common standard.

i think that the first and third could coexist well,
one is pretty much a spaceport and the other is just a better version of the ISS

It won't matter who's the best. Just the fastest

Any successor station needs artificial gravity. In addition to the health benefits, it would also enable running water so astronauts can stop pooing into vacuums and only taking sponge baths… 🤢

If you are going to have rotating space stations, it would be a good idea to develop a standard for bigger docking ports which can be walked/driven through - unless you like crawling from one room to another. Do this before all international competitors produce their own bespoke and incompatible designs.

7:30 How much redundancy so that if one section is disabled, the remaining section has some of the essential capabilities?

Can you point me to the "Advanced Life Support Systems" that have already been made?

Put them all up there. I could see having one in lunar orbit.
