Napoleon was a military commander who became an emperor. When he became Emperor he applied his knowledge to orgazie his army and made it better than any other.

The key to his success was their speed, his army was so fast in everything, come fist take the position they want and give the enemy position they want them to be at. This way he made them react to his moves, therefore he was always ahead of them. Other european armies were less advance in this aspect. But it come at a cost, his army carried very little supply in order to be fast, which within Europe worked to his advatage, Europe is small and divided, small cities and small dutchy easily switch sides, and supply his troops with food. So his new way of organising logistic was revolutionay in Europe, and completely disaster when he came to Russia.

Russian vast territory was a death sentence to Napoleon quick and fast strategy. Russian could withdraw infinitely while wagging scorched earth tactic against him. He had initial success when he step on Russian territory, and his line of logisitc supply was not too long, but as he go deeper and deeper the supply line extended. Kutuzov - Russian Marshal understand he couldnot beat Napoleon on open field, so he avoided fights, and allow Napoleon army to run around and get exhausted. The exception was Borodino battle. Russian were outnumbered by Napoleon army, and Napoleon army was much more experienced, better trained, better organized, it was the army that conquered Europe. However the Russian surprised Napoleon - their artillery was bigger than Napoleon own collection of artillery of all defeated European states. The Borodino battle end with small advantage on Napoleon side, 30.000 dead French and 40.000 dead Russian (~ 160K-170K troops on each side). The Russian could keep fighting, but Kutuzov took a right decision to let Napoleon take Moscow, and let General winter take the fighting.

Winter came and the Russian vast territory and extended line of supply hit Napoleon army hard, his soldiers starved, get cold, get ambushed by Russian partisants. Unlike other European nation, when Napoleon conquere Russian biggest city, it means nothing, he barely conquered 5% of Russian Empire, he would have to chase down Russian army and Tsar for enternity all over Russia, a country the size of a continent, it spread from Poland to Kamchatka, from Swedish border to Turkey and Iraq, from Northern Sea to China. When they said Russia could not be tamed, Napoleon didnt understand it the right way, they didnt mean Russian ability to fight, but the size of their empire and very hard geography, extreamly harsh climate, unlike anything Napoleon used to in warm France and Italy, his soldiers would have to learn how live in these condition to conquer Russia.

Fun fact, when napoleon was exiled to elba, he escaped 1 year later. And when he died, his coffin was layered by another coffin, and another, and another, and another to prevent him from escaping.

Napoleon never tamed Russia. He just gave it a chance to express its dominance over all else below the realm of heaven.

Alexander is the greatest commander of all time.

- Never lost
- Always fought against enemies with different tactics and armies. This ability is so underrated. He had keen intuition and always came up with a sound plan to defeat armies despite never having encountered their way of fighting before. The Mongols failed in forested areas, the French lost in the bitter cold, the Arabs lost in the Mountains of Asturias, Alexander never lost despite geographic challenges.
- First recorded instance of a predominantly infantry army whooping the crap out of a nomadic horse archer army (Battle od Jaxartes).
- Always outnumbered.
- Was not just good at open field battles but siege warfare as well.
- Strategic excellence, so many famous generals who were tactical masterminds like Pyrrhus and Hannibal lacked strategic genius.
- Actually fought from the front as opposed to the majority of army heads. Sustaining multiple injuries throughout his campaigns.
- Literally shared in the hardships of his soldiers. For example, when his army marched across the Gedrosian desert and was suffering from thirst. Some of the soldiers offered him a helmet filled with whatever little water they could find. He rehotically asked whether it was enough to quench the thirst of his army. When they replied no, he emptied the water in the helmet onto the sands, refusing the preferential treatment.
- Was a pioneer of cultural syncretism in an era when xenophobia and bigotry were the norm.
- Accomplished all of this in a 12 year campaign at the age of 20 to 32.
- Eloquent and tactful to prevent a mutiny and even keep an army motivated and well supplied so far from home for the entirety of his campaign.
- Established Koine Greek as the first ever global language after ushering in the Hellenistic Age. This cultural dominance would last well until the fall of the Byzantine Romans.
- At the end of his life, he was the undisputed ruler of the known world, Napoleon wasn't even the ruler of the island on which he was held prisoner.
- People say he inherited Phillips armies and generals. Well, they all sucked and often disagreed with his plans. And they couldn't even hold onto, let alone expand upon his conquests. Compare that to Genghis Khan, who had Subotai and his sons, who successfully managed to further the empire well past his death and even during his lifetime.
- Some revisionist, nationalist Indians will claim he lost in India. As an Indian myself, I know this makes absolutely no sense as why would he after losing in India desire to conquer the mighty Magadha by crossing the Indus, proof of this is the mutinty of his army who were aversed to fighting yet another mighty empire. I doubt he would want to invade the ten times stronger Magadha if he was defeated by Porus.

Alexander is so underrated.
