As a veteran, I never took an oath to protect the government of the US; I took an oath to protect and defend the constitution.

This is not even remotely surprising.

As a marine corps war veteran, I can assure you that every member of the service is first a person with their own mind and personality. Citizens largely tend to place people in the military in this higher moral standard of existence and that is simply not the case.

Not everyone joins the military because they want to fight for freedom. Most go because they simply have nowhere else to go. Or they go because of the benefits. We are NOT all heroes. But we ARE all people, with all of the social variables that entails.

Sure, there are some exceptional human beings in the military. But to act like everyone in the military is exceptional is a fantasy at best.

Believe me, I have seen it.

On another forum, a veteran wrote about how he was invited by a coworker to come hang out with a group that included a lot of other veterans. He went and found out it was one of those nutty right-wing militia groups. And learned gradually that the other "veterans" were mostly guys who had washed out of basic or had been discharged for reasons. He determined it was not his cup of tea.

Sad but I'm not surprised, law enforcement as well. Many of the January 6 insurrectionists had ties to military and law enforcement. They get the training/knowledge with intent to use against the very country they're supposed to serve and protect. Thank God the majority of our service men and women are honorable to our country.

I´m a vet. Not too concerned about the boots on the ground. There are always going to be a few. I´m more concerned about those with stars on their shoulders. How any self respecting member of the military, vet or their families can hold any respect for a draft dodger who referred to our hallowed dead as suckers and losers is beyond me.

I remember a comment from a Twitter where the writer said she was a nurse in the ER and treated a lot of the police for injuries, and when they took their shirts off a lot of them a lot of them had swastika tattoos. She was shocked. Right wing police and military is hella scary…
