Macross: Do You Remember Love? is a movie that still holds up, and even made me cry a little tear.
🎞️ In-Universe Phenomenon:
The Macross universe expands beyond the typical mecha genre, giving birth to its own in-universe movie. " Macross: Do You Remember Love?" Movieception if you will.
🎤 The Song That Echoed Through the Cosmos:

Well, Robotech is based on Macross.
That said I will never hate Robotech and love Rick and Lisa love story.

Macross - Do You Remember Love has absolutely NOTHING to do with Robotech. It is based completely off of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. Harmoney Gold and the rest of the Robotech franchise was something completely separate.

As a kid of the 80’s I can tell you Robotech was huge This movie eventually made its way and the animation was a huge improvement from the original. Vintage all the way and still one the best.

The in-universe movie status was declared several years after the movie came out. Many anime movies made after a series concluded are re-imaginings and this is the case for DYRL. They took lots of alternate options (such as the ARMD ships docking rather than naval ships and Max macronizing as opposed to Millia micronizing) and fixed things like all the animation errors and silly things like the Macross ship transforming multiple times. Shoji Kawamori had no intention on continuing the franchise but was convinced in 1994 to make Macross Plus and Macross 7. It was only at that point that a movie about Space War I within the Macross universe was declared to have been made.

I remember the first time I saw this movie back in late 80's. IT CONSUMED every waking moment of my childhood for months. I was doodling SDF-1s, VF-1s, replaying the song over and over in my head. I got lucky enough to record it off TV and was able to watch it over and over. To this day, 40 years later, it is still my #1 favorite space opera mecha anime of all time.

I just recently watched it for the first time, it was spectacular! The animation, the style, the solid characters, the story, it was like taking the absolute best parts of Macross, and condensing it into a very solid 120 minutes. Music was so good too! Cant wait to watch it again.

This is well made but contains misinformation. Macross and Robotech are actually two separate things.

Robotech uses an edited version of Super Dimension Fortress Macross. They changed a lot of details and couple of major plot points as well. This is alongside two other unrelated anime series.

Macross itself is an ongoing franchise that has nothing to do with Robotech. Last year Macross Delta had a second movie released. That was alongside Macross Frontier special episode.. Even a new Macross anime series in the works. Had various other manga, anime and games released over the years as well. Most Macross anime are done in the style of a documentary or dramatisation of past events. That style originates from Super Dimension Fortress Macross.

Finally a lot of anime tries to keep Japanese tracks included now. Much bigger fandom for both anime and Japanese music. There is a lot more access to original anime as it releases. To the point edits like Robotech are considered out-of-date. Anything even close to that level of editing gets hated on.

As has been said, Robotech was based on Macross, with a few other elements thrown in, using animation from Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber M.O.S.P.E.A.D.A.. I like em both. (All, I should say.)
Discovered this through Robotech. Fist saw Do You Remember Love in the 90s in a fan-subbed bootleg.

The feature film's love triangle hits harder if you think about it.
In the TV series, Hikaru was in love with Minmay but she only saw him as a friend and she is stolen from him by her cousin.
In the feature film, both Minmay and Hikaru are in love with each other, but he later believes that she is dead and gets together with Misa. Minmay on the other hand longs to see Hikaru again but when she does, she realizes that he has been taken by Misa and it is too late for her.

I couldn't care less about Hikaru and Minmai's relationship in the TV series and Misa was his perfect partner (started my crush on younger men dating older women) so I mourn with Minmay over her shock and despair in the feature film where she genuinely loved Hikaru but Unfortunately, fate wanted otherwise (and started my love for harem endings).

Macross DYRL is just Macross it had nothing to do with Robotech (Macross saga) it's just a movie that they decided to make BC the fans in Japan really craving for Macross
P.S. I don't know about American ver. But it's just a movie that cut "unimportant" things form the original Macross left only love triangle and some others things not a an in universe movie

This might have actually been the first anime I ever watched. My dad had it on video when I was a kid.

It is pretty common for long running anime to get a summarized movie adaptation. Gundam itself had a 3 set compilation movie for the 0079 MS Gundam. Macross Frontier (tv) later had the False Songstress and Wings of Goodbye as it's compilation movie with revised plot and mech. Even the Macross Plus OAV 4 episode got a movie adaptation that switches some part of the story. Never mixed Macross and Robotech as the changes in the plot/terminology (example Protoculture) is too different and has a different set of songs.

They gave it the in-universe movie status during one of the sequel series years later. Before that it was just considered a re-boot or alternate universe story.

Robotech is a sum of 3 unrelated japanese animations, Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeeda. This movie has nothing related to Robotech. It is Macross.
