Happy Birthday Eli4777 From-Robin&Guppy&Sean :-)
Jim Croce - Operator Lyrics
Operator, oh could you help me place this call
You see the number on the matchbook is old and faded
She's livin' in l.a.
With my best old ex-friend ray
A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated

Isn't that the way they say it goes
But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
But that's not the way it feels

Operator, oh could you help me place this call
'cause I can't read the number that you just gave me
There's something in my eye's
You know it happens every time
I think about the love that i thought would save me

Isn't that the way they say it goes
But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Operato,r oh let's forget about this call
There's no one there I really wanted to talk you
Thank you for your time
Oh you've been so much more than kind
And you can keep the dime

Isn't that the way they say it goes
But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Died at age 30, after 5 albums, and countless classics. He’d be pushing 80 if he was alive, and I’d still be blown away by all of the songs he made over 75 years...but he got 30.
Show me a 30 year old dude today with as much wisdom, and the ability to express it so beautifully.

Both Jim Croce and his guitarist shown with him in this video were both killed in that tragic plane crash when Jim was only 30 years old. I can only imagine how many more hit songs he would have had if he we still alive today. RIP Jim.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest songs ever written.
Jim wrote this song in 1972 and died a year later.
Its sad to think he never got the chance to see the impact this song went on to have.
This man and his music was special....RIP Jim Croce....the year 2022 needs more people like you!

"Operator, let's forget about this call. There's no one there I really wanted to talk to."
Got to be one of the most painful unrequited love lines ever written.

I still haven't learned to take it well. I wish he had lived.

That plane crash took away two amazing talents from us. RIP Jim and Maury.

Back in the late 1980's, I was driving on Interstate 5 in California headed up to Fort Lewis, Washington. I was driving late at night, and practically falling asleep at the wheel. This song came on over the radio, and I started singing along with it. Woke me right up until I made it to my planned stop. Thanks, Jim :)

My oldest brother, Roy, died about three weeks ago. Like me, he loved this performance. It's hard to listen to this now. I put on the album version earlier tonight. I was walking away and staggered from the sudden wash of grief.

Here's to you, Roy.

Possibly the best story ever written in a 3 verse pop song: The back story is beautifully, succinctly told in verse 1. She is gone and the hurt is made deeper by the betrayal of his best friend. His forgiveness is expressed in the first chorus. In verse 2 he displays the profound loss of his true love. The second chorus, more softly sung, shows that he isn't quite sure that he is in fact over her. Verse 3 expresses his closure. It is done, there is no need to speak to her anymore. The even softer performance of the chorus expresses his regret for what will never be again. Unbelievable artistry poetically and musically. I was a teen when he was in his prime and his songs alternately tore my heart out or (with I Got a Name) became my anthem. Love ya still Jim!

The man singing back up was Maury Muehleisen, he also died in the plane crash the killed Croce. I love the way he looks at Croce in this song with so much admiration. What a loss to the music industry. RIP Jim and Maury

My dad passed away 2 weeks ago. He was 64. I’m listening to all his favorite musicians. It’s like getting to know him all over again. I love this song and most of what Jim has given us.

I wish my Wife looked at me the same way Maury looks at Jim! On a serious note - of all my years browsing YouTube, I still believe this is the greatest live performance ever uploaded. Rest in peace, Jim Croce & Maury Muehleisen. One day I'll be able to watch you two perform live in heaven.

What’s funny is that originally Croce started as a backup guitarist to Maury Meulheisen, who was classically trained. Once Croce started writing songs, though, Maury saw the writing on the wall. He was smart enough to recognize and enhance great talent. Just a dynamic duo. Maury truly was an integral part of Jim Crowe’s sound. As much as Garfunkel was to the early Paul Simon.

That line "you can keep the dime", and the way he expresses it, hits so hard.

To the 455 folks that gave the "thumbs down" Jim Croce is one of the best American singer/song writer artists in American history...full stop.. Sorry don't understand or hear it for yourself. Your problem.
